About Charles

My distinguished academic career includes top GPA in high school, where I also placed first in the American Chemical Society’s all-county chemistry competition.

I graduated Western Washington University Magna Cum Laude with a BA in the social sciences, with an emphasis on statistical analysis, which included taking graduate level classes in MANOVA.
In graduate school I focused on solar energy studies and computer programming, where I wrote a computer program to simulate the performance of passive solar heating and cooling of buildings and published a paper on it in the academic journal Proceedings International Solar Energy Society/American Section. I also won a finalist position in the Mitchell Prize on Sustainable Development international competition; topic: evaluating alternative energy systems for the sustainable state.

Later I attended Whatcom Community College, in Paralegal Studies and Computer Information Systems, where I achieved admission to the academic honors society Phi Theta Kappa.

I’ve provided instruction and one-on-one tutoring as a group discussion leader, graduate teaching assistant, computer center user consultant, at private computer companies, and with individual students, beginning as an undergraduate.

This is a most exciting time for students in STEM, but you must achieve a firm grasp of the basics to maximize your career trajectory. Let me show you how to learn how to learn, and find the beauty, joy and power that results from mastery of your subjects.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

While a student in computer programming I achieved a 4.0 GPA in high-level languages, assembler, programming strategies and techniques, and computer system architecture. While a graduate student I wrote, from scratch, a program to simulate thermal processes in buildings, based on the principles of heat transfer physics and the mathematics of systems of partial differential equations; I published a paper on the program in the Proceedings of the American Section of the International Solar Energy Society. While a graduate student I worked at the computer science center as a programming consultant, tutored students privately, and later provided programming instruction at private computer companies.

Computer Science

While a student in computer programming I achieved a 4.0 GPA in high-level languages, assembler, programming strategies and techniques, operating systems and computer system architecture. I studied computer systems security, virtualization, and networking using MS Windows Server 2012/R2. I have a working familiarity with operating systems MS Windows and Linux.

Fortran

While a graduate student I wrote, from scratch, in Fortan, a program to simulate thermal processes in buildings, based on the principles of heat transfer physics and the mathematics of systems of partial differential equations; I published a paper on the program in the Proceedings of the American Section of the International Solar Energy Society. The program was used to design the passive solar heating and cooling system for a large residence near Auburn, CA.

Pascal

Using Pascal I wrote, from scratch, a program to track stock prices and develop stock trading strategies. I developed the program on behalf of a private client, an independent brokerage firm in San Francisco, CA. The program accurately identified the major trends in the equities markets.

Public Speaking

As an undergraduate I received A in speech class, but I found public speaking to be quite intimidating, so I set about teaching myself how to overcome the fear of getting in front of lots of people. I served as an interest group representative during which time I testified for hundreds of hours before public agencies and spoke for a similar amount at other public meetings. I ran for public office which required speaking before both large and small audiences, participation in debate at public forums and on the radio. Later I taught candidates how to present themselves at public meetings, using a set of techniques developed out of my own experience.
