University of Washington (Elem. Education)
I have three years of private tutoring experience, and six years of elementary teaching experience. I have tutored pre-school through grade 9, in Math, Reading, Writing, Spelling, Handwriting, and Science.
My experience as a classroom teacher strengthens my ability to meet the academic and emotional needs of the students that I tutor. I assess students at the first session in order to establish clear learning goals. After a learning goal is met, new goals are made and worked on. I love to teach children, but I also love building their confidence, and watching as their love for learning grows.
I have taught and tutored math in grades Pre-k through 9. As an educator I look for the gaps in a student's understanding of a concept, and I use a variety of games and activities to fill in that gap. I'm not afraid to answer the question "why?" I use manipulatives, pictures, algorithms, movement and repetition to help students understand their math.
I have taught several children to read, both as a tutor and as a teacher. I am empathetic and systematic. I have a variety of games and activities to teach reading and grammar.
I have taught handwriting as a tutor and as a teacher. I have several ways to make handwriting fun for primary aged children, and then I use a printing/drawing book to work with older children. Just like with any subject, if there is a letter that a child needs to work on then we will work on it. sometimes the problem is in how the child is holding the pencil, sometimes students do better with a special pencil. Those are things I look for.
With study skills I help students to organize, take notes, and I may teach some comprehension strategies. It really depends on the child and their specific needs.
My schedule has recently opened up. Please contact me if you are looking for a tutor, and/or if you have any further questions. I am new to this site, but I do have references from past families. I look forward to hearing from you! I have three years of private tutoring experience, and six years of elementary teaching experience. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught handwriting skills in multiple primary classrooms, as well as to students that I tutor. I have used the curriculum "Handwriting without Tears." I have used multiple printing books, as well as shaving cream to write letters, white boards, and chalk boards. I always teach to start at the top, I teach students to use the 3 lines method, and I compare the lines to a house. So, "h" starts "upstairs" then goes "down stairs" but it doesn't go in the "basement" like "p." I try to make handwriting fun, but effective.
