About Joel

When I was young, I wanted to be an artist. Then in college, I decided to study biology, because it’s the study of life, and what could be more interesting than that? Also, I thought about how it would give me some interesting career options. I studied to get my B.A. in Biology, M.S. in Biological Sciences, and Ph.D. in Natural Resources with an emphasis in fisheries biology. Along the way, I took a lot of math and statistics classes, and developed skills in science, math, and scientific writing. Since then, I have taught college courses in general biology, human biology, ecology, fish biology, and marine biology. I have also worked as a fisheries biologist.

I love teaching, and my favorite part is working one-on-one with students, teaching and advising. I love to see that light bulb go on, when a student gains a new understanding. Being more of an artist than a scientist when I began my journey, I had to work hard at math and science. Because of that, I can empathize with students who have a hard time with those subjects. I learned strategies to succeed in math and science, and I enjoy sharing those with my students.

I am an outstanding math tutor, because I had a hard time with math at first, and I understand the stumbling blocks and how to get over them. Also, I understand and can share the usefulness of math in its applications in everyday life, and in business and science. When students see why they are learning math, it makes more sense, and they are more motivated to learn.

If you need help with math, science, or science writing, I would be glad to help you be successful. Please feel free to contact me, and we can talk about what your needs are, and what I can offer you. Whenever you’re ready, we can schedule lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

More about my subject area and teaching expertise
I have taken college math classes including algebra, precalculus, calculus, differential equations, and statistics courses. The higher level math courses require use of basic math, fractions, geometry, and algebra, so I continued to increase my skills in those areas. I have taught college science courses that included math, and I love teaching. The best part is working with students one-on-one and seeing the light go on when they "get it." I have taken tests and am qualified to teach the following math subjects through WyzAnt: Elementary Math, Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and ACT Math. I am also qualified to teach English.

Nutrition

I have taken courses in human nutrition and animal nutrition. My Ph.D. research was in the subject area of nutrition of farmed rainbow trout. I developed feed formulations for trout with optimum amino acid balance. I taught a course in human biology, with a section on nutrition.

Statistics

I have taken college statistics courses including Elementary Statistics, Statistical Analysis, Biostatistical Analysis, and Multivariate Analysis. In my M.S. degree and Ph.D. research, I used several different statistical methods to analyze experimental results. In teaching a course in introductory biology at Boise State University, I instructed students in doing a statistical analysis of data they had gathered on heart rate. Statistics is a powerful tool for finding out and demonstrating relationships of cause and effect.
