About Jesse

I graduated with Bachelor's degrees in Physics and Math from Western Washington University, where I tutored math and taught physics lab courses for three years.

While I specialize in math and physics, I bring an interdisciplinary approach to my tutoring. Motivation and curiosity are as important as any procedure. It's no good laboring through material without any context or understanding of why and how it relates to the world. In my experience, this only leads to burnout and frustration. My background in the sciences allows me to show students the connections between math, chemistry, medicine, history, and art.

Often repetitive homework problems teach students a few narrow procedures, but leave them unprepared for tests that require a deeper understanding. My goal is for students to understand material well enough to attack problems unlike any they've ever seen before, by relying on fundamental principles and adaptable problem-solving skills. This kind of mastery is invaluable when confronting difficult tests and solving problems in the real world.

I have tutored high school math as well as all levels of a typical undergraduate curriculum for years. I have experience with pure mathematical proofs as well as extensive experience applying math to scientific problems in physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science. I understand that many people have had negative experiences with math, and I make it a priority to understand a student's mathematical background and goals as we progress. Math is a language, and just like language it can be dull and monotonous or it can be fluid, articulate, and tell an exciting story. My hope is to show people the doors that math can open up while developing fluency in applying this powerful tool in their lives.

If you'd like to ask me any questions or schedule a lesson, please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

I have a bachelor's degree in Math from Western Washington University, which included several courses on ordinary differential equations, including applications to mathematical biology. I also have a bachelor's in Physics, where the use of differential equations was required in nearly every course. Finally, I held a tutoring position at my university for three years, and differential equations was one of the top subjects I helped students with.

Linear Algebra

In obtaining my Bachelor's in Math, I have completed several courses in Linear Algebra. In addition, I have taken several courses in applying Linear Algebra to the study of linear and nonlinear Differential Equations. I have tutored Linear Algebra in WWU's Math Center for three years.

Physics

I specialized in Physics at university, and it's definitely my passion. I taught Physics labs at WWU for three years, where we focused on teaching students how to develop their own models for physical phenomenon based on the evidence they saw in lab. From this I learned to help students look at a problem from many different angles until the underlying physics 'clicked'.

Many students don't have trouble with physical concepts so much as they do translating them into mathematical equations and finding use for them. My background in math education allows me to help review whatever fundamentals students may struggle with and learn how to use these equations as a language to express concrete physical relationships.

Physics underlies all of the sciences, and the study of light and sound waves, even at the high school level, touches upon creative disciplines like art and music. Even students with other goals in mind can still get enjoyment out of their physics class if they make the right connections, and I work hard to facilitate this.

Best Tutor Yet — Jesse has a huge amount of experience in the maths and sciences. He understands these materials very well and is great at explaining them. I'm currently receiving help in differential equations and I truly believe he explains the content much better than my professor. I have been looking for a tutor to help me in the maths and sciences for a while and no one has compared to Jesse. ...
