Summary: I can help you overcome math anxiety by empowering you to understand and make meaning of what you are learning. I can tutor children to adults in any math subject through differential equations, as well as physics and environmental science. I have recently moved to Bellingham and am a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Mathematics Department, but I love working with students one-on-one. If you or your child is in High School, it is important for their future that they not develop math anxiety. Also, remedial math classes at the college level are not very supportive: please ensure that they do not need remedial math in college. I can help.
Here are the details:
Since 1999, I have taught and developed a variety of math and environmental science classes for undergraduate students, including Calculus, Applied Algebra, Math for the Liberal Arts, Energy and the Environment, Weather and Climate, Math Methods for Elementary Teachers. I have delivered classes online. I and a colleague designed the Math Methods course to emphasize the rigor and depth of the Common Core Standards, and I have attended several conferences on Common Core implementation and assessment. In developing and teaching these courses, I have been well served by my graduate education in Atmospheric Sciences, Mathematics, and Education. As any college math or science instructor in the country would agree, many college students are not prepared for college-level mathematics. Regardless of the reasons students are ill-prepared, I enjoy and am effective at preparing students for college-level math, particularly non-traditional students as defined by age, and/or by socio-economic status.
Many mathematicians and scientists are motivated to learn math because of its inherent beauty and intellectual challenge. However, many more students are not motivated by the intellectual challenge and do not appreciate the distinction “mathematical elegance.” These students’ experiences in math classes are not elegant; it is usually their ability to reproduce established problem-solving techniques on exams that defines their success, and the techniques are promptly forgotten. Many students are merely taking math so they can either get accepted into college, or so they can satisfy college-graduation requirements. The learning of math is seen by many as a completely isolated activity, not relevant to anything else in their lives or careers. These students must be motivated and empowered by deep meaning, relevance, and problem-solving. If you are one of these students, I can help make a lasting difference for your life.

I will reduce my hourly rate to 80$ per hour after tutoring you for 4 hours. The rate $120 per hour is up to 3 people, so get your friends to join you in a tutoring session!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
