About John

I love teaching one-on-one because I have always loved to learn and wish to awaken the same desire in my students. When they reach a breakthrough after hard work and persistence, I rejoice along with them. I have 20 years experience in software engineering and related fields, and over 5 years experience teaching and tutoring at the middle school, high school, and college levels. I hold 4 degrees from Stanford University in music, computer science, and engineering.

I specialize in all levels of mathematics, computer science, and music theory. I also have an excellent vocabulary and command of English grammar, so I am well equipped to help students prepare for standardized tests. Tutoring for specific coursework is focused on homework assignments and the student’s own textbook. I often derive my own tests to challenge students and to instill confidence in their comprehension.

I am completely open to feedback and adaptable to student needs. I will work to find the best location and arrangements that fit your schedule.

I look forward to helping you succeed and achieve your goals. Contact me today!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have successfully tutored and taught this subject before. I also aced the WyzAnt approval test.

Algebra 2

I have successfully tutored and taught this subject before. I got a 100% on the WyzAnt approval test.

C

I learned the C language near its inception 40-some years ago and have used it extensively over the intervening period. I have taught the subject at City University (night school for employed people working towards a higher degree) and tutored individuals in its practice.

C++

I have over 15 years' experience using C and C++ in industry. I have also taught both subjects at the university level. I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer-related subjects from Stanford University. I understand the language thoroughly and am effective in helping others grasp the key concepts.

Calculus

I aced my calculus classes and earned AP credit when entering university. I also recently passed WyzAnt's qualifying test with flying colors.

Computer Programming

The languages I have programmed in are Fortran, C, C++, Objective-C, C#, Algol, Lisp, Smalltalk, Pascal, and various specialized assembly and microcoding languages for mainframes, digital signal processors, and digital synthesizers. I have taught programming courses at the college level (C, C++), and was recently a finalist for a professorship in Computer Science at a liberal arts college. I also worked as a software engineer for over 15 years.

Computer Science

My doctorate is in the field of Computer Music, a combination of the disciplines Computer Science, Music, Electrical Engineering, and Speech & Hearing Science. I have taught courses in Computer Science at the college level (C, C++, Object-Oriented Design), and was recently a finalist for a professorship in Computer Science at a liberal arts college. I also worked as a software engineer for over 15 years.

Discrete Math

Discrete Math is the foundation upon which Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is built, and I have used DSP extensively in my graduate studies in computer music and in the speech and hearing sciences. I have also put Discrete Math to much use in my various jobs in speech recognition. This is one of my favorite subjects and I enjoy sharing it with students.

Ear Training

I have been a musician all my life, developing a keen ear for all aspects of music. I utilize dictation (notating what is heard) to a great deal in my ear training exercises, concentrating at times on melodic intervals, at other times on rhythm, and at still other times on harmony. I believe everyone is capable of training, at least to a satisfactory degree, the ear to recognize and identify these elements, regardless of musical background, and I enjoy helping others to improve this skill.

Electrical Engineering

I have both a Ph.D. minor in EE and an MSEE, both from Stanford University. My specialty was in signal processing architectures and digital signal processing. Most of my career in software engineering involved working with the processing of speech, music, and images. I have about a year's experience teaching EE concepts at the university level.

Geometry

Geometry is of tremendous value in helping one to visualize many key fundamental mathematical concepts. I am quite facile in working with geometry and in adapting to whatever approach is used by the students' teacher(s) to present the subject. I have tutored geometry before, and one student's parents were so pleased with the turnaround that they offered me unsolicited a letter of reference. I have a solid foundation in math and am effective in identifying and correcting whatever stumbling-blocks are tripping up the tutee.

Music History

I majored in music at Stanford University, and I went on to get a master's in composition and a Ph.D. in computer music. Naturally, I have thoroughly studied and assimilated Music History along the way. I can help students gain a greater appreciation of any particular period of music history they desire.

Prealgebra

I have advanced degrees in math-related subjects (computer science and engineering) from Stanford University. I have over 20 years experience working in software. I have successfully tutored this subject before. My approach is to assess the student's stumbling blocks and help him/her overcome them by thinking in new ways rather than to impose a strict curriculum.

Precalculus

I took AP calculus in secondary school, receiving college credit. I got a perfect score (800) on the math portion of the SAT, and aced the qualifying test administered by WyzAnt.

SAT Math

I have successfully taught this subject before. I got a perfect score on the Math section of the SAT when I took it.

SAT Reading

I have successfully taught this subject before, helping students to improve their vocabulary and reading comprehension.

SAT Writing

I am currently writing professionally and have helped many others improve their writing skills.

Sight Singing

I have a very thorough background in music, having received 3 degrees from Stanford University in various aspects of the subject. I have been a singer all my life, participating in styles as diverse as classical choral singing, small all-male groups (doing folk, barbershop, pop, madrigals, etc.), church singing, and serious contemporary performances. My ear is excellent and I have experience conducting small singing ensembles, helping them with blend and pitch issues. I have also helped others to learn sight singing tricks (e.g., how to hear intervals before singing them) in both informal and university classroom settings.

Statistics

I have experience using all aspects of statistics (i.e., levels of significance, distributions, t-test, ANOVA, etc.) in a variety of applications. These include experimental design and regression of results to data models. I have also passed WyzAnt's qualifying test.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is one of my favorite subjects. I aced the subject in high school and continued to use it extensively in college both for calculus and for musical acoustics/synthesis. I have also incorporated it into the teaching I have done at the college level.

Writing

I currently earn part of my living through writing technical articles for publication on the Web. I have also published for academic journals. I have a thorough understanding of grammar, syntax, style, and sentence construction, and I enjoy helping others to improve their writing skills.
