Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA (Enrolled)
I'm an Environmental Science graduate student at Western Washington University. In 2013 I graduated Cum Laude from Colgate University in upstate New York, where I majored in Physics and minored in Geography.
My interests are in tutoring math and science at the middle school, high school, and undergraduate level, as well as SAT and ACT mathematics prep. Teaching, as well as learning, have long been passions of mine. The excitement I experience by helping others learn is what makes the job meaningful and enjoyable. To help a student become interested and proficient in his or her subject matter is my primary goal. My valued assets are my educational background, analytical skills and approachability, which I hope to put to work for you.
Some of my hobbies and interests include the rock climbing and hiking, bike riding, cooking, and the ever-constant task of teaching myself guitar. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions regarding anything.
Have a great day. Hello!

Jamis has a great way and he has clicked well with my son. My son said he is patient and ensures that he fully understands the concepts before moving on to a new topic!
Jamis has met with me several times to work on physics with calculus. He helps to explain conceptual topics and review problems from class and exams to correct mistakes and prevent making them again in the future. He is great at helping build confidence and feel successful with the material.
Math has always been a struggle. My son has a certain learning style. Jamis was able to conform to that and have patience while explaining problems step by step. My son feels very confident now.
We've had two sessions with Jamis and already, he has a great rapport with my son. I've listened in on the sessions and found him to be patient, engaging and able to meet my child on where he needs support the most. This is my child's first experience with a tutor and it has been very positive so far.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a graduate with a physics degree, I've spent many hours practicing and perfecting my algebra skills. Algebra is an essential tool for solving many different types of problems, both academic and in everyday life. I enjoy the challenge of 'finding x' and would love to share my knowledge with you!
In college I successfully completed several astronomy classes, including Planetary Mechanics, Planetary Science, and Astronomy in Culture. In addition, my senior research class was in astronomy, during which I analyzed the spectra from several planetary bodies using an infrared spectrometer, and identified distinct spectral features in these spectra. Astronomy has long been a hobby of mine and few things inspire me more.
My academic background is strongest in the physical and natural sciences. In college I studied physics and physical geography, and thus have been exposed in an academically rigorous setting to many different areas of the physical sciences, including geology, geography, hydrology, many different areas of physics and astronomy, biophysics, and chemistry. I'm a self-designated 'science nerd', I just LOVE science, and sharing my passion with others.
My undergraduate major from Colgate University was in Physics. I have completed classes in calculus based mechanics, planetary science, electricity and magnetism, electronics, quantum physics and relativity, and biophysics. In addition, I have completed mathematical methods classes geared towards Colgate's physics majors including differential equations, 3D calculus, and Fourier analysis. My senior research project was in astronomy.
