Ryan is a Bellingham native and alumnus of Geneva Elementary, Fairhaven Middle School, Sehome High School, University of Washington, and Western Washington University. He has 12 years of diverse experience ranging from one-on-one tutoring with K-12 students facing reading difficulties to adult instruction in advanced areas of mathematics, statistics, and physics.

Ryan has a bachelor of science in Applied and Computational Mathematical Science from the University of Washington, a degree that includes heavy coursework in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, and Physics. He also completed graduate coursework in Experimental Psychology at WWU. In the Department of Psychology at Western, Ryan conducted research related to specific reading disability (dyslexia).

Though Ryan has research experience in dyslexia and tutoring experience with children with reading and spelling difficulties, he continues to tutor all ages at all levels in Mathematics and Science. He has tutored hundreds of students in

Mathematics
- Elementary Principles (Fractions, etc.)
- Algebra
- Geometry
- Trigonometry
- Linear Algebra (Matrices, Optimization, Linear Programming)
- Calculus (Multivariate)
- Discrete Mathematics (Graphs, Digraphs, Path Analysis, Combinatorics)

Statistics
- Probability
- Research Methods (Hypothesis Testing)
- Correlational Methods
- Regression Analysis (Continuous, ANOVA, Logistic, etc.)
- Cannonical Analysis

Reading and Spelling Remediation

With experience as both a tutor and instructor, Ryan understands the importance of working within the course curriculum of his pupils' teachers/professors. He uses an agile teaching style that adapts to a student's needs and provides a unique perspective that complements course material. He communicates with his pupils' teachers and professors to ensure that his teaching method is consistent with curriculum objectives.

Ryan's research on dyslexia and tutoring experience extends to learning disabilities commonly found to be co-morbid with dyslexia, including phonological disorders (stuttering and speech impediment), and executive function disorders (ADHD). Additionally, Ryan understands that a child's difficulties in school are not confined to simply learning to read, spell, do math, etc. His experience tutoring children with learning disabilities has given him a strong understanding of the emotional challenges his pupils face daily. Teachers and parents often see those challenges manifest as behavioral issues. Ryan has a unique ability to connect with such students in a way that allows them to enjoy learning and to engage in their own education.

Ryan's experience includes:

- one-on-one K-12 tutoring with Herzog Tutoring in Seattle
including Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Basic Science

- teaching assistant at Western Washington University in the Department of Psychology
including courses in Statistical Research Methods

- classroom instruction and curriculum design at ITT Technical Institute
including Computer Science and preparatory Mathematics

- EFL for children with parent victims of HIV in Lima, Peru

Ryan competes as a cyclist and triathlete to maintain some of the athletic ability he earned as an NCAA Division 1 athlete at the University of Washington in Track and Field. He has traveled extensively on nearly all continents. (Yes, including Antarctica).

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT STUDENTS UNDER 18 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT FAMILY MEMBER FOR THE ENTIRETY OF THE SESSION.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

In addition to my Learning Disability research focus on Dyslexia at Western Washington University, I have extensive experience working with students with ADHD. The reason I have acquired this knowledge and experience is because ADHD is highly co-morbid with Reading Disability (dyslexia), and other language disabilities. In fact, children with language disabilities are often misdiagnosed with ADHD as a root disability, when it is secondary to their language disability.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I am a graduate student at Western Washington University conducting research on sensory (auditory, visual, articulatory/motor) level perception and memory in dyslexia. I am well educated on both the leading research in dyslexia, including both Phonological Theory, Rapid Processing Theory, and Temporal Processing Theory (Magnocellular Theory). I am also well informed about reading remediation programs. I am currently tutoring 2 students with phonological dyslexia; one student is 9 years old, and the other is 23 years old.

Absolutely the BEST!

Ryan M. is an incredible tutor. My only regret is that I didn't find him earlier because he has made such a difference in my schoolwork. My grade point average has gone up dramatically since I started working with him. He is patient, friendly, explains things in a way that I understand, gives me lots of great tips on focusing and staying organized, and he is just an all around great guy. I recommend him for anyone who wants their grades to improve. He has reduced a lot of stress for me this year by helping me stay on top of my grades, and I have a lot more confidence as well as knowledge. An A-plus tutor with an A-plus personality!

I feel extremely lucky to have found someone like Ryan to tutor my son. Ryan is not just a good teacher, he goes above and beyond to find out what learning style works best for the student. He is always on time and always gives 100 percent.
