Professional private tutor with 10 years of diverse experience. I've worked with various organizations, in both paid and volunteer roles, with students of many different ages, backgrounds and skill levels, with both individuals and groups, in many different learning environments. Because of this wide range of experiences, I'm very adaptable, and work well with just about anyone.

My educational background is in pure mathematics. I earned a bachelor's degree with honors at Berkeley, and a master's degree at Cambridge in the UK. I have also done some graduate coursework at the University of Texas in Austin -- I left the PhD program there to pursue a career in the technology sector.

Math is my specialty, although I also tutor physics. stats, and computer science. I tutor in all these subjects at the high school level and lower-division (pre-major) university level. At the upper-division university level, I tutor all math, and some stats and computer science.

My tutoring style is patient, flexible, supportive and highly communicative. I tend to emphasize principles and concepts over rules and memorization. I use metaphor, analogy, pictures, and words as much as symbols and equations to both explain material and help solve problems. I try to help students get away from a plug-and-chug mentality; the ability to effectively select and use the right tools for a problem follows from a solid understanding of the concepts involved, and not the other way around.

I work to help students not only learn to do math and physics, but to understand them, and in doing so, hope to impart to students some appreciation for their beauty and truth.

I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to achieve success in your studies!

Statistics

Statistics

I've taken university courses in probability and have been tutoring it heavily for the past 5 years. I've helped many students succeed in their probability courses at the University of Washington. I use probability extensively in my current areas of focus, data science and machine learning.

Calculus,

Calculus

I've studied calculus at many levels over the years, both the beginning college level and beyond (Advanced Calculus, Analysis, Differential Geometry). I've made extensive use of calculus techniques in other branches of math (Probability, Statistics, Optimization). Also I've been helping students with Calculus for over 10 years, at both high school and college levels.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

While pursuing a BA and Masters degree in Pure Mathematics, I have taken two courses dealing with differential equations, and have a thorough knowledge of the subject.
Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I have a BA from Berkeley and Master's degree from Cambridge in Pure Mathematics. I have taken discrete math, and have taken many other courses which have covered discrete math topics and subject matter (e.g. algebra, algebraic topology). I have also tutored many students in discrete math, foundations of computer science, and related topics (e.g. graph theory, combinatorics) over the years.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I have specifically taken a course in finite math, have a BA and Masters in mathematics, and have covered the same material in other courses. In addition, some of my tutoring experience involves finite math topics.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I have a BA from Berkeley and a Master's from Cambridge, both in mathematics. I have taken lower and upper division linear algebra courses, and as a graduate student at UT Austin, served as teacher's assistant for two upper division linear algebra courses. I've helped many university students succeed in their linear algebra studies over the years.
Logic,

Logic

I have a BA from Berkeley and a Master's from Cambridge, both in mathematics. I have taken courses in symbolic logic at the lower division level, and in mathematical logic at the upper division level. Furthermore, my background is in pure mathematics, which is heavily-proof based, requiring an excellent working (as opposed to purely theoretical) knowledge of logic.

Incredibly Patient

Ryan is one of the most spectacular math tutors I have ever worked with. I spent a lot of time on wyzant looking for someone who could help with a graduate-level data science course which was a mix of calculus, probability theory, computer programming, and statistics. Ryan moved adeptly between disciplines, was incredibly patient with my newness to the field of study, and was even able to tackle subjects new to him because of his fundamental comfort with challenging math. I will be in touch with him should further math coursework be necessary in my PhD program.

Great tutor, flexible and accessible

Due to my son's illness Ryan was a frequent visitor in our home. Ryan brings a calm and surety to his tutoring sessions and was a huge help in getting through a very tough academic year. I would highly recommend Ryan.

Very capable tutor

Ryan helped me with complex derivations and problem solving in fluid dynamics. He was a very effective and efficient tutor. Although he did not have experience tutoring in my specific type of application of fluid dynamics (atmospheric sciences), he was able to figure it out quickly, with his strong abilities in applications of physics concepts, and teach it to me. Not only did he learn the material rather quickly, but he was also great at explaining complex math and physics to me. Given that it was a graduate level fluid dynamics course, his intellectual curiosity and ability to grasp new concepts quickly were commendable. I would recommend him to anyone looking for help in any quantitative course. Additionally, he was flexible and easy to reach despite his busy schedule. When we couldn't work out a time to meet, he was still proactive about helping by working from home on his own time and answering my questions. I would recommend his services 100%.

Extremely patient tutor who goes out of his way to help his student.

Ryan tutored me for linear algebra, as well as in differential equations. Linear wasn't my cup of tea, and I definitely wouldn't have passed linear algebra without his help. Ryan is very responsive, and can be reached by txt, email, and Dropbox if you have any questions at any time. Ryan knows his stuff. And I would recommend him to anyone struggling in a college level math class (or any level math class). Thank you Ryan!

Awesome tutor

Ryan knows his math very well and can teach you in plain English. I studied Discrete Mathematics with him and I believe I got every question right on the entrance exam to my Master's program. Now we are tackling Linear Algebra. I highly recommend Ryan for your math tutoring!

Great tutor - tailored to my son's needs

Ryan was just perfect for what we needed. He connected with us to determine what was needed. Ryan is very professional, prompt and easy to work with. My son enjoyed working with him very much. (The only reason we've stopped is because my son graduated!) Highly recommended!
