About Heather

I have tutored students of all ages in subjects ranging from reading and arithmetic to philosophy and the life sciences. I really like teaching algebra because it is a useful subject and helps people get work.

I am always happy to help people learn how to use the internet, search for jobs, and get computer skills that everyone is expected to know in our "digital world."

I am a professional web administrator / web archivist with experience in teaching all ages how to use the Internet and Internet related technologies. I believe in fostering a love of learning.

I am also a mom, a farm and local food activist, and community health advocate - someone who believes in the potential of all people to find wellness and strength in their lives.

I can help with reading, writing, planning and studying, research, paper writing, test preparation, general school subjects (social studies, biology, history etc.), and job seeking and interview skills. I am also more than able and willing to aid in mathematics coursework for k through 10.

Learn how to learn and the rest will follow! I hold a Masters degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington. I have a BA in Anthropology, and my educational background is focused in biology and mathematics. I have been a tutor on and off through my whole adult life, and I deeply enjoy being a tutor because learning helps people do more of want they really want and need to do.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I spent most of my undergraduate years in mathematics classes with the fullest intention of becoming a math teacher! Life led me in a different direction academically, but I have never dropped my love of math. Nor have I lost my desire to get others interested in this subject too!

Algebra 2

Once you have a really solid handle on your arithmetic, understand or have some familiarity with manipulating variables, exponents, and can always do your sums in the correct order of operations you are ready to start understanding and applying what a lot of courses call algebra 2. Here you can really begin to see how graphs and equations and inequalities really work, you get to play with trigonometry, logarithms, quadratic equations and gain a firmer grasp on all the math that came before! Probabilities and statistics are usually introduced now. The power of describing through mathematics is the goal of algebra 2. No matter where you are BEFORE algebra 2, I can help get you through all these concepts and sums.

From base chemical interactions to the complex adaptive systems of our ecosphere, biology captures the detail of how we and all lifeforms live on the planet. I have a background in microbiology, genetics, general biology and ecology, and I can help you build learning tools that organize the details into the bigger picture. This helps you learn more and faster, and creates a great base for adding even more subject area content.

College Counseling

Making the choice to go to college or university is mostly about commitment! It is an amazing and wonderful thing to do no matter if you are a freshman, returning, or older student. Selecting and applying to a school, choosing a learning path, developing your interests into a career; these are the tasks that I can help you accomplish. I can help you navigate your way through university and student loan applications, and I can help you have confidence in your decisions. Don't stop learning and don't NOT go to college out of fear and confusion.

I have been actively involved in college and university life (academia) for over 20 years. I have worked at both community colleges and universities in addition to successfully completing my masters in Library and Information Science. I can help you select a school, write application essays, prepare for interviews and entrance exams if necessary, and help you better understand how to work with your professors and school administrative staff. Regardless of why you want to go to college, I can help you get from confusion to confident student.

My undergraduate years and much of my professional work today is centered on ecology and environmental issues. I am a science librarian who also works on policy issues that are directed by lots of research. Not only do I like the subject and spend a great deal of time reading within its various subjects, but I have to keep on top of the issues for work. Also, I just think it is fundamentally important to understand ecology because we all live here on Earth!

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Masters degree in Library Science, with training in Big3 and Big6 skills. My undergraduate background is in biology and mathematics and anthropology. I also actively participate in a homeschool for my daughter and many local neighbors in conjunction with my school district for k-6th students. I tutor reading, math, general science, arts and crafts, history, geography, and social studies for this age group

Elementary Math

All people should have basic literacy and numeracy skills. I teach to the student and not just through a methodology. Some students need more time, some less, some need more hands on, and some get the basics through general repetition. However the student learns, the goal is the same; learn to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and have awareness. Story problems and real life scenarios are a must because that is where these skills are used. Everyday!

General Computer

I have been working with computers for over 20 years. I have seen them evolve from tape driven to flash drives, and I have spent the last 15 years as a technical consultant who researches and advises the best use of computer technologies for small groups. I am proficient in computer set-up, networking, general repair, and maintenance. Whether you work on a Mac or a PC, I can help you get the most out of your machine. I have taught all ages how to operate a computer, trouble shoot common problems, access and utilize the programs that are installed, and install, configure, and use new programs.

Microsoft Excel

I use Excel for a lot of reasons, and I have been using it for 20 years. It is an incredibly powerful organizing and analytic tool, it is an easy way to do many things a lot better. Stop keeping a bunch of files in weird places and learn how to use Excel (or any program like it) to power up your work and save yourself a lot of hassle and time.

Study Skills

I am a believer in life long learning, and I practice that belief everyday! Most schooling is focused on content and testing but not on learning. It takes more than the ability to read to learn. It takes the ability to study. Studying is a commitment and a practice - it is how a student approaches a subject, recognizes and uses subject resources, and the way that they assess their own performance. I have tutored students of all ages since being a college student myself and I have taken many study skills trainings to help me in my own academic career.

I can teach you the best way to approach a subject and master it! Whether you are a visual learner, a reader, or a listener type student, learning how to make and keep a study plan will help you achieve your learning goals without feeling too overwhelmed. Here is a brief list of how I can help you:

Studying basics: lesson materials and resources - how to use what your teachers give you.
Time management - how much work does an assignment take? Don't waste your time, make it work for you!
Test preparedness - practice taking tests, thinking about test, and not being afraid of tests.
Study habits - note taking, list making, cheat-sheets/study aids, working in groups, self-assessment.

Web Design

I am a research librarian who specializes in technology for small groups and e-learning solutions for small organizations. I have 5 years of direct experience teaching web technology and basic web-design and web-development to individuals and small groups. Some areas where I can help you learn are:

Up to intermediate level Adobe Dreamweaver and Fireworks
Content Management Systems: WordPress, joomla!
Basic level database design and management with basic level PHP
Collaborative workspaces and digital tools for group communication
Social networking for groups, email lists, mailing applications, e-communications and e-communities

All of these areas are needed for good solid web design. The creative inspiration for the look and feel of a website must be overlaid on solid web-technologies using best practices for user-centric interfaces. Good web design is where art and technology can be put to a practical test. I can help you build a core knowledge set that will allow you to develop and grow as a web designer.
