About Carleen

Writing and reading can be extremely difficult, as the subjects do not have an objective "right" answer. As a tutor, I focus not on telling a student what to edit or how to think about a certain text, but instead on mindset and thinking tricks formulated to help improve your overall reading and writing performance. There is no formula that a person can follow to become a perfect reader and writer; instead, my tutoring sessions and overall structure are tailored to each individual student's way of thinking.

While at the University of South Carolina, I worked in the Writing Center attending to both collegiate and graduate students in all areas of study. The tutoring ranged from simple editing/proofreading reading work to brainstorming for paper topics and as such, I am well qualified to take a paper from the conceptual stage to a finished project.

Also at the University of South Carolina, I taught both literature and basic "English 101" courses, which focused on critical reading, composition, and rhetoric. My own studies focused on Victorian British fiction, 16th, 18th, and 19th century British and American fiction, Modern literature, Shakespeare, and poetry. While in college, I also studied Classical (ancient Greco-Roman) literature.

I am available for improving reading and writing skills of any level, working through English courses, proofreading any type of text (from literature to scientific), and assistance for English papers. As mentioned before, my goal is to help you improve your skills as needed, and this comes through thorough thought, writing and reading exercises, and detailed in-person help.

I conduct lessons anytime between 9 am to 8 pm everyday, and can travel to students. My rate is $40 per hour, though discount lesson packages can be arranged; please contact me for details. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

With an undergraduate degree in English and Classical Studies, and a Master's in English Language and Literature, I am well versed in almost every area of English study, while also being professionally equipped to teach both reading and writing. Additionally, having been a teacher of English literature at a collegiate level, I understand how best to approach various texts and personally work with students to get the best results. Within these parameters, I prefer to work with various reading and writing exercises, extensive conversations based around literature and reading questions, and detailed in-person help with writing.

Grammar

While at the University of South Carolina, I worked at the Writing Center. Many of the students who schedule sessions were having trouble with grammar, and as such, I became well versed in identifying grammar problems and explaining solutions. Additionally, while also teaching writing and composition, many of my lessons focused on the basic grammar problems that most writers struggle with: passive voice, tenses, point of view, voice, etc. To improve a student's grammar, I like to work through scripted writing exercises, while also using the student's own writing. This helps in identifying problem areas and then crafting various ways to help the student recognize and solve the issues.

Literature

With both an undergraduate degree in English and Classical Literature, and a Master's in English Language and Literature, I have spent the majority of my academic years immersed in literature of all types. Additionally, I have taught literature courses on a collegiate level at the University of South Carolina, and led other classes in discussions about various texts. When it comes to teaching literature, I prefer to guide students to make their own conclusions rather than offering out answers. This includes sessions of reading and writing exercises, extensive conversations and questions about the literature, and reverse teaching: having the student teach me about the literature so as to ascertain a deeper understanding of the text itself.

Proofreading

While at the University of South Carolina, I worked in the Writing Center, and a large percentage of the students who scheduled appointments were there for proofreading and editing. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, I also taught writing courses at a collegiate level. This required a lot of proofreading and grading various English papers. I take pride in the fact that throughout my teaching at USC, the majority of my students took my editing and suggestions to heart, becoming better writers in the process.

Reading

While studying for my Master's, I taught both "English 101: Critical Reading and Composition" courses. As such, I know how to identify student levels of reading comprehension, and help improve said skills in personalized, logical steps. In teaching reading, I prefer to have students do small readings (either at the lesson or beforehand), and then have in depth discussions regarding the texts while also working through various small exercises.

Vocabulary

In the past, I have taught both literature and basic English courses, which focused on critical reading, composition, and rhetoric. All of these topics are grounded in various uses of vocabulary, and thus much of what I taught was geared towards said subject. When tutoring students in vocabulary, I like to work with writing and reading exercises: reading to put words in context and ask students to swap words around; and writing, to help identify problem areas and challenge students to improve through practice.

Writing

While studying for my Master's in English Literature, I also taught several courses of English 101 (titled "Critical Reading and Composition") and 102 ("Rhetoric and Composition"). My students came from various education backgrounds, and therefore I know how to teach to both basic and advanced writers. When teaching writing, I prefer to identify problem areas and then use writing exercises (from sentence structure work to overall paper organization), discussion of stylistic choices, and demonstrations of brainstorming exercises to teach various ways of understanding and improving students' personalized writing skills.

Personable and Professional

I can recommend Carleen without reservation. She is personable, professional and has demonstrated a keen sense of opening language arts to students as demonstrated by her approach with our 16 year old daughter. Some kids that can benefit from a tutor need a real personable person to guide them. Carleen has this and the deep knowledge of English studies to make a real difference.
