Augsburg College (Communication)
University of Minnesota (Master's)
I have 2 years experience teaching communication at a Big 10 university, 4 years of tutoring and guest-lecturing at a private liberal arts college, and 4 years of working in an undergraduate college admissions office. I'm especially good with communication studies instruction such as public speaking, interpersonal communication, and intercultural communication - but I also have experience in general humanities education, so let's talk sociology, history, and more!
My favorite thing about teaching is helping students feel more confident in their abilities to learn. We all have our own unique strengths and weaknesses, and some of us even have it extra hard, with things like intellectual disabilities. But most of us are blessed with the ability to learn and to improve, even if we think we can't.
I taught public speaking undergraduate college courses for 2 years, tutored it for 4 years, and was a competitive public speaker for 6 years. I also have a great writing background - I've interned with the third-largest magazine in the U.S., and I've written for other outlets and big companies.
I've worked in marketing for 8+ years - at a college, for an HR firm, and in technology/games.
As a high-schooler, I developed my own world history independent study course to supplement my small town's meager education offerings. Then, in college, I was an international relations major in addition to a communication studies major. Studying international relations, I've become knowledgeable about things like modern Chinese history (e.g. the Cultural Revolution), Japanese pop culture post-WWII, and early civilizations such as Mesopotamia.
I can't wait to hear from you! Please note that I sometimes need about a day to get back to you if I think we're a good match. Hey!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 8+ years in marketing and communications. I started in 2007 at Augsburg College, where I ran a social media marketing hub and supervised 12 student employees.
In 2011, I began teaching communication at the University of Minnesota. After UMN, I worked as a marketing communications project manager for a small HR firm in downtown Minneapolis. There, I managed their total brand overhaul, writing newsletters, editing website copy, designing product sheets, creating social media accounts, and more.
From 2013 until late March 2016, I worked as a product marketing specialist at Nintendo of America. There, I led 11 games (projects) and was backup on 7 others, plus one hardware. I managed campaign plans; wrote scripts, marketing copy, social copy, and key messaging; reviewed nearly all marketing materials for my lead games; and supervised TV commercial shoots for Nickelodeon, Disney, and internal purposes.
I taught communication - primarily public speaking - at a Big 10 university for 2 years. I also tutored public speaking for 4 years at a private liberal arts college. Prior to that, I competed in public speaking tournaments for 6 years, and advanced to the state tournament finals (Minnesota).
