I have 20+ years experience working with students of all ages. I am honored to be part of each student's journey into the beauty of math, from the middle school student struggling to develop a concept of herself to the young adult returning to college to pursue his dream of becoming a nurse. Respect for the student is at the center of my approach. Some students stay with me for a year or so, realize their strengths in math, and move on. Probably half choose to work with me for many years and consider math their strongest subject.
Generally, success in coursework takes first priority. If the student has energy beyond what is required for school work, I have plenty of supplementary materials to choose from areas such as remedial skills, art in math, computer programming, and standardized test preparation (SAT, ACT, GED, etc.). The right match in temperament and teaching style is critical for nurturing each student's growth. I strive to meet each student exactly where they are and help guide them, whether they are struggling or excelling, to find the next step. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
