About Marlene

I have been tutoring for over three years for WyzAnt. I love tutoring and helping students in a wide range of ages - fifth grade to adults - to improve their writing skills. I tailor my teaching to the individual needs of each student, guiding them through the organization of their thoughts and the structure of their paper, creating clear sentences, and using proper grammar.

Other specialties include:
Guiding college-bound students in writing unique and compelling essays to increase their chances of being accepted by their college choices.

Working with professionals to improve the message and grammar of their presentation papers.

Editing and giving content feedback for novels. So, if you are an author who needs a pass on your soon-to-be best seller, I would be pleased to help. My rates are negotiable from the posted rate.

Organization and feedback for oral presentations, such as in class talks or oral professional presentations.

I have more than 15 years of experience in technical and nontechnical writing. I received a BA in English from University of California, Berkeley, where I wrote literary papers. My writing experience includes technical documentations, marketing documents for corporations and nonprofits, and simple news releases. So, I am knowledgeable of many styles of writing. In addition, I have experience with public speaking and interviewing. I have also taken post-graduate courses at other colleges, such as Bellevue College, and am currently improving my speaking skills as a member of a local Toastmasters Club.

My students seem to enjoy my patient and creative teaching style. I enjoy working with many styles of learning and personality types. (Note: As much as I would like to work with students with special education needs, I am not certified and do not feel qualified to do so.) Finally, having travelled around the world, I have an understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment when working with students from different cultures.

My hours are flexible and I am willing to travel to you. However, I do have a limit within 6 miles of my home unless we arrange special agreement. I always start the first few lessons in a library or coffee shop.

Please read my reviews under "Student Feedback" to see what others have said about my tutoring. Should you not be sure if I am the correct tutor for yourself or your student, I offer a 30-minute introductory session for $10.

If you need a patient and creative teacher for grammar, structuring an essay or presentation, or editing a novel, please contact me. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you through WyzAnt.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Experience in English comes from schooling and experience. I have both, which include an English Degree from University of California Berkeley and several years of writing technical and marketing material for corporations and nonprofits.

I also understand that there are different words for the same meaning in the English language, depending on the country and even the state in which you live.

My skills in English are both written and oral and include excellent organization and grammar.

General Computer

I would say everyone has a different definition of general computer knowledge. My knowledge is based on several years as a technical writer of applications, networks and the UNIX operating system. My current knowledge is based on my everyday usage of Word, Gmail, Access and other applications. I am great at helping the beginner because I can relate to that level from being a writing for end users.

I work on an HP PC and an HP netbook, not out of any bias, but to keep my work parallel. I have the very basic understanding of hardware and software; for example, RAM means Random Access Memory, the memory within a computer and booting up the system basically means starting the computer.

Grammar

I have several years of writing correctly and proofreading for grammatical errors as a technical writer and a marketing writer.

Also, I have a degree in English from the University of California at Berkeley, where I learned correct grammar for essays and work based on The Associated Press Stylebook. I also learned the importance of following the instructors' assignment requirements and completing several proofing passes.

Microsoft Access

I worked with the basics of Microsoft Access as a volunteer for Audubon Society where I needed to use Access to process membership letters. I can teach a student the basics of using Access.

Microsoft Word

As a technical writer, I used Microsoft Word to create documentation. Currently, I use Word to create letters, marketing material with simple graphics and tables for every day uses.

This software is also useful for creating temporary files to then cut-and-paste into other programs, such as Publisher or Office PowerPoint.

Proofreading

My proofreading experience includes editing papers for high school and college students, and editing papers as a technical writer and a marketing writer.

I have a degree in English from the University of California at Berkeley where I learned excellent skills for proof reading papers.

Public Speaking

I can assist with public speaking tools. I have experience as a Toastmasters member and a natural love and talent for speaking in front of groups.

I have spoken at many nonprofit events for audiences of 50-300, and had a year of standup training for computer classes.

Reading

Reading is a wide topic, spreading from books, magazines, online data and many sources. It also means comprehension. You can read information and not understand it. I have read English novels, computer manuals, school texts and even comic books. They each need to be approached differently, depending on the purpose for reading each one. And, each one can add to our growth as a person.

Spelling

As an English major, I learned excellent spelling skills and I believe I have a talent for spelling words correctly. However, even more important is my skill in knowing the correct resource to use, such as online spell checkers and old-fashioned paper dictionaries.

Vocabulary

My vocabulary skills are excellent as I have an English Degree from the University of California at Berkeley and have written technical documentation for over 15 years and marketing material for nonprofits for several years. I enjoy improving my knowledge through online learning tools and extra activities, such as crossword puzzles and word games.

Writing

I have written all my life, starting in school as an English major. I graduated with an English degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

Using my degree, I wrote marketing and technical material for corporations and for nonprofits. I now help with nonprofits, some online blogs and descriptions, and of course tutoring WyzAnt students in English. I have helped with writing assignments, assisting from the beginning with formulating a thesis to simple grammar correction. I have also helped write a speach. I have excellent grammar, organization and spelling skills. And, if there is something I do not know, I am glad to help find the correct answer.
