University of Chicago and University of Oklahoma (Math)
California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, CA (MBA)
My name is DJ, and I have been a tutor and educator for 13 years, teaching and tutoring math at UW and BC, and in one-on-one and small-group settings. I was high school Valedictorian, GPA 4.0 / 4.0, a College Honor and National Merit Scholar at a Top 10 University, and recipient of an Honors Professional Bachelor's degree in Math. I also have a Masters degree in Business, MBA, summa cum laude, with a GPA of 3.9 out of 4.0.
As a tutor and teacher I have more than 10,000 hours of experience. And I really love helping people!
The truth is, though, that a tutor can have 10,000,000 hours of experience, plus even more degrees from other prestigious schools, but what really matters is results.
Is the client receiving the most improvement desired and/or possible?
My proven track record includes
* Ds into Bs
* Bs into As . . . and sometimes Cs into As
* +160 on SAT Math (+similar gains in Math and Science on most every standardized test)
* +100 on SAT Verbal (+similar gains in Verbal / Comprehension / Essay on most every standardized test)
* Key guidance BEYOND the books -- lease ask me about this ;-)
* A real sense of understanding and achievement for the student.
Within a couple of sessions, if the student does not say or feel that I am doing 'a good job,' 'a really good job,' 'a great job' -- 'Wow! he's awesome!' -- 'Why can't the teacher just say it like that?' -- or some other similar phrase, that student would be in a very rare minority.
Stylistically I am friendly, supportive, and low-key, and I really love my job! Past results have been dramatic, not only in grades and scores, but also in the student's sense of accomplishment, comfort in the subject, and satisfaction.
My philosophy of teaching is simple: we set goals, we organize a plan to achieve them, and then we adjust accordingly to achieve the desired results.
But mostly I'm just a patient, articulate, insightful, and supportive guide to my favorite academic subject!
Chinese Math, Common Core, Montessori, most all classes through high school, most college courses: --no problem!
My areas of expertise also include Physics, Algebra, Calculus, Geometry, English, Literature, Writing, and most any subject up through high school (GPA 4.0/4.0), and standardized test prep. On ACT, GRE, SAT, etc., I can reduce the number of wrong answers in Math by 40 - 60%, Analytical / Science / Reading by 30 -
50%, and other Verbal by 25 - 40% within 10 -15 sessions).
(depending on the student, of course! ;-)
Wyzant guarantees your satisfaction on the first hour with a tutor. I'll go further and double that guarantee. If you tell me after two hours with me as the tutor that you are unsatisfied and want to quit, I will cancel he charges.
Is it possible that I just might be the best Math instructor your student will ever have . . . ?
I hope you will give me the opportunity to prove it.
Thank you sincerely,
GMAT, GRE, SSAT, K-6, K6, K12, English, Elementary Science, Elementary Math, ACT Math, Algebra I and Algebra II (Algebra 1 and Algebra 2), Calculus, Chinese Math, Geometry, LSAT, Physics, Poker, Prealgebra, Pre-Algebra, Precalculus, Pre-Calculus, PSAT, SAT, SAT Math, Trigonometry, Common Core, Vocabulary, Spelling, Writing, and more. Hi!

In just two sessions, Decker clarified a few key concepts my daughter was missing in pre-calc. She scored 100% on this week's quiz, and her confidence in math is back. Outstanding.
Within the first tutoring session my son learned many valuable tips on how to raise his score on the SAT. Decker connects easily with students and teaches them a new way of looking at problems that makes it so much easier to understand! We are very happy to have him tutoring our son!
Decker is excellent with our son. He is patient and creative and my son truly enjoys his lessons with him!
We have had many no-show, no-calls. My son needs consistent reliable help, and really liked Decker's teaching style, but he is not getting the help when he needs it. We are done trying to get him tutored by Decker. We've had our son set up with two other tutors through WyzAnt, and each time we have cancelled out with them when Decker decides he's available again... but then has been a no-show each time.
He comes with his own set of rules and contract about not giving him enough cancellation time or being late, the biggest is about transportation fees if you live outside of his made up driving circle. We live in the same city Decker lives, he lives in the North end we live in the South end. He asks you not to share with WyzAnt that he has his own rules.
He is an awful communicator, he only seems to want to correspond via email... not convenient when I'm at work, and can't check my emails, which I have told him multiple times almost in each email correspondence. I have even asked him to correspond with my son directly if he can't meet him. His email messages are so cryptic. It's hard to figure out what he is trying to say. When you respond it'll be 1 to 2 days before you hear from Decker again... and get a totally different answer.
Don't waste your time. Lot of time is wasted with communicating but so un-reliable. Good Luck!
Had the review been fully fair, she would have mentioned the single most important thing: I had pneumonia. Being dead-sick is what caused me to have to cancel on her twice in a row.
My son had his first session with Decker last night. It went very well. He said that Decker is a great teacher and he thinks he will learn a lot from him. He helped my son get a grasp on concepts that had challenged him.
Decker is a real professional, qualified and great at delivering what he knows to his student. He has missed a few sessions due to illness, and communication about this needs improvement.
We have been using Decker as my sons high school math tutor for some time now. Decker has built a wonderful relationship with my son and has showed a very patient and calm approach when helping my son. Quite often I hear him explaining things that my son might not have grasped in his math class and the way his regular teacher taught it. Decker is always patient and can try different examples of teaching techniques until they are grasped and understood. My son's math grades have greatly improved since we have started our weekly sessions. Thank you.
My son is very pleased. Decker is very easy to contact and schedule a lesson. He arrives on time and the lessons are very productive. We will continue to work together as needed. Thank you.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
