I greatly enjoy helping people learn, and would like to help you as well. I am a licensed teacher and online tutor with years of teaching and tutoring experience. I have taught Science and Math for 7 years at various grade levels in Public Schools in Oregon and California. I also provide professional development to other teachers on topics such as NGSS, CER, Rubrics, Google Classroom etc. I have worked with a variety of needs and have scaffolding to support students, including but not limited to:

Students with learning disabilities
Students who are developing English fluency
Students with trauma
Students from many different backgrounds and socioeconomic status

I graduated from University of Oregon with a Masters in Education in 2015. Before that I was a tutor for a few years. I graduated in 2012 from UCSC with a Biology (B.S.) degree. I also tutored other students there as well as some high school students.

I believe my past will help me serve you best, and each new session will be a valuable experience for me. If I was given the opportunity, I would work with you to build the skills and habits it takes to succeed.

From my past experiences, I have learned the biggest thing that prevents learning is disliking a subject. I try to make my examples relate-able to my students' everyday life, showing them how they can use a concept in the real world. I also work on developing self-management skills, so that learning can be done efficiently and with confidence.

I can use my Wacom Pen/Tablet on our Interactive Whiteboard Program, or other online learning tools like Desmos or Google Slides. I have a Yeti Microphone and pop filter for clear audio. I can also record sessions for later review, and share any documents we work on. I also intend to create independent self guided lessons in Wyzant and Youtube.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,
Andrew McLaren

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra can seem intimidating at first, but with the right tools students can learn to love math. I try breaking down the concepts, and connecting them to the real world. Ive worked at a learning center for the last year, and most of my math students just needed a personalized approach to algebra.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have tutored AP Chemistry and Physics, which includes much of the applications of the concepts in Algebra 2.
Biology,

Biology

I majored in Biology at UCSC, graduating with a 3.61 GPA. I've taught for 7 years, and I've tutored for over 2 years now for both high school and college biology courses. For Biology I usually work on memorizing strategies and rewording concepts to make them more accessible. I have a Masters in Education so I know techniques that can enhance learning.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I majored in Biology at UCSC, graduating with a 3.61 GPA. I've been a middle school teacher for the last 7 years, but before that I had tutored for over 2 years for both high school and college chemistry courses. I also have endorsements from California, Washington and Oregon to teach Chemistry. When I took AP chemistry in high school I got a 5, and I got A's in all of my college chemistry and organic chemistry courses. Equations can seem intimidating at first, but I've found by showing students some organization methods, and linking them to chemistry's fundamentals, students quickly improve.
Physics,

Physics

I have taught for the last 7 years, and have over 2 years experience tutoring physics before that. I tutored high school, AP and college students in Physics. I have a solid understanding of the class as well as teaching techniques to enhance the process. As someone who has a family full of physicists, I had plenty of people to explain the basics. They showed me how to make physics a game, as well as how to avoid common misunderstandings. In college I not only enjoyed these courses, I found myself helping many of my classmates! When I worked at a tutoring center, I found that most of my students were for physics, and thus developed many techniques to explain and show how physics works in the real world.

I was a Biology (B.S.) major and Graduated in the top 15% of my class. I got an A in my Genetics class, and have taught or tutored the subject across all grade levels including college, high school and middle school. I use a variety of models and strategies to connect the mathematical model to the genetic mechanisms. Group sessions are available.
Organic Chemistry,

Organic Chemistry

I got an A in both 108a and 108b, my organic chemistry courses at UCSC, as well as in the labs. I've tutored a couple of UCSC students in those courses as well as a SDSU student in their organic chemistry class. Although it is a very abstract class, its applications are essential to understanding the form and function of the fundamental molecules of life, ie proteins, dna, rna, carbohydrates. Most students who struggle in this class merely need to be more efficient with the time they spend memorizing the reactions, I show them how I systematically memorize lists as well as the logic behind synthesis( multiple step) reactions.

Praxis

I have Taken the CSET which is the California's version of the Praxis exams for the following: General Science I (118) General Science II (119) Biology/Life Science III (120) I also Took the NES tests when I got my license in Oregon so I can also tutor for the Chemistry and Middle School Math equivalents. These tests can be very stressful due to the time limit, but a couple test taking tricks can help you manage your resources better for the test.

very helpful tutor

Andrew really helped my daughter with her college chemistry homework. He was able to explain the problems and concepts to her in a way that she understood and followed up with helpful notes. We will definitely be continuing with him.

Highly recommended!

My daughter has had a of couple lessons with Andrew to prepare for her Honors Chemistry midterm test. Andre breaks down hard concepts and makes them easier to comprehend with clear explanations. My daughter feels more confident and we’ll definitely continue with Andrew.

Easy to understand

Thank you for helping my daughter understand few concepts of Honors Chemistry. She said that Andrew was very easy to comprehend and his steps were straightforward and didn’t cause any confusions. My daughter will definitely book another lesson with him.

Physics

Andrew is patient and really helped my stressed student with physics! He is knowledgeable and explains concepts well. We were desperate for help after a prolonged absence and missed instruction. We will keep scheduling him for sure!

Lily, 3 lessons with Andrew

Connected with my reluctant student

We have only had one session with Andrew so far, but my daughter who really HATES Physics and has never connected with a Physics tutor, said she liked him and thinks he can help.

Kathleen, 7 lessons with Andrew

Explains well and patient

My son worked with him in chemistry. He was very knowledgeable and explained the concepts he needed help in, very well. He was patient with the questions. He worked on sample problems with him to make sure he understood the concept they were working on. He also asked after explaining if my son understood, when it was clear he would move on to next thing.

Raza, 6 lessons with Andrew

Good First Session

After just one lesson with Andrew, my son already feels more confident with AP Chem and we look forward to his continued progress.

Rashawnda, 2 lessons with Andrew

Patient tutor and cool

He helps me understand my AP chemistry lesson that my teacher does not explain well. He breaks it down to where I can grasped the material better. I do recommend Andrew as a chemistry tutor.

Nidian, 6 lessons with Andrew

incredibly helpful and easy to understand

Andrew is incredible at breaking things down to a very understandable level. Chemistry is a difficult class with a lot of layered concepts, and I really feel like he has done an amazing job at teaching me. I'll admit that I get frustrated and easily overwhelmed and not once have I felt that way during our tutoring lessons.
