About Brian

I have been a licensed Psychologist for 32 years and a counselor for 42 years. I am currently retired from full time employment and want to stay active as a tutor. I was most recently an Associate Professor at Bastyr University and also maintained a small private practice.

As a generalist practitioner of Applied Counseling Psychology, with primary professional interests in Vocational and Health Psychology, I place a special emphasis on career development, stress, and performance enhancement. In the past I also served as Adjunct Faculty in the departments of Family & Preventive Medicine, Psychiatry, and Social Work, while on the Medical Staff of the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics.

I also served as Coordinator of Career Development and Multicultural Programs at the University of Utah Counseling Center. and was a Diplomat in the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. So, I have been teaching, counseling and consulting for many years, including 5 years abroad in Asia and Europe with the United States Air Force.

I received the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal in 1991 for meritorious service while in the Republic of the Philippines. My other college counseling or teaching appointments include Boston University, University of Maryland, Chapman College, Maharishi International University, Argosy University, Central Texas College, Coe College, Grinnell College and the University of Iowa.
My formal education includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology/Social Science from Macalester College, a Master’s in Student Development in Postsecondary Education from the University of Iowa (National Institute for Drug Abuse fellowship), and a Doctorate from the University of Utah. I published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology, Journal of College Counseling and the Journal of Counseling and Development. I have provided presentations, workshops and consulting at international and regional venues on topics such as meditation, trauma, and career development. I was co-recipient of the 3rd Annual Pete Suazo Social Justice Award in 2004. This award is given by the University of Utah College of Social Work and was granted for my activities in “training, outreach and awareness building”. A part of the two-page citation for this award states…“Dr. Riedesel is a master teacher in formal classroom settings as well as in outreach and workshop settings for diverse groups…” I have been practicing meditation on a daily basis for 44 years and taught meditation for 42 years. I also speaks fluent Minnesotan.

I have a solid understanding of the testing and test preparation process for standardized exams and am able to teach stress management and performance enhancement skills. I did well in statistics in two different graduate school venues.
I am the former head of career counseling services at University of Utah Counseling Center.

I love working with students and helping them grow, succeed and have some fun in the process. Give me a call and we can see if we might be a "good fit" to work together.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I have held a PhD in Counseling Psychology since 1982. I was in charge of the University of Utah Counseling Center Career Development Programs from 1982 to 1988 and 1996-2009. I was Assistant Director of Career Services at Grinnell College from 1977 to 1979. In those contexts I coordinated related in-service training, planning, program development, research, program evaluation, consultation and outreach activities. In addition I supervised delivery of related direct services including consultation, classes, workshops, and individual counseling, as well as provided similar direct services to students.

College Counseling

I have a PhD in Counseling Psychology and a Masters degree in Student Development in Higher Education. I have provided counseling, teaching, training, student development workshops and supervision in various student affairs settings in many colleges and universities for 40 plus years in the USA and abroad. I love working with students and have received great satisfaction from this over many years. Now that I am "retired" I am available to do tutoring without any distractions!

SAT Math

I have a solid understanding of the testing and test preparation process for standardized exams and am able to teach stress management and performance enhancement skills. I did well in statistics in two different graduate school venues.

SAT Reading

I have broad understanding of the testing and test preparation processes for standardized exams and am able to teach stress management and performance enhancement skills, as well. My GRE scores in Verbal were very high. I can help you with how to read and reason in a way that will improve your ability to respond to multiple choice items within a time limited context.
