Hello! I have a passion for teaching, and I thoroughly enjoy helping people learn business technologies. My undergraduate degree is in music education, and recently I taught Business Education classes as an adjunct instructor at a community college, receiving excellent reviews from both faculty and staff. My professional business career spans over 25 years at Fortune 500 companies, working in the Finance department of major telecommunications and banking firms. In 2007 I earned a Masters degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in technology and innovation management.
Most of my tutoring experience has been in Microsoft Excel, helping students at the beginning and intermediate levels of expertise gain more confidence in the use of spreadsheets. I've also tutored in SQL and general computer studies, and am certified to tutor in Word, Access, and HTML. Learning tends to "sink in" through practical, hands-on experience, and often in tutoring sessions we take the time to practice technical techniques. My tutoring style is informal, but each lesson is structured, as we focus on your specific objectives through a mix of direct instruction, Q&A, and practice time.

At this point, I'm available for evening and weekend appointments. Monday through Friday, we can meet between 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. On Saturday, we can start anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. If you need to cancel, I ask for a minimum of two hours advance notice.
My WyzAnt location is set to Auburn, WA in order to extend my geographic reach for students. I live in Thurston County, have worked in Bellevue and Seattle, and currently work in Vancouver WA. Most of my tutoring sessions have been on the Eastside (Bellevue/Issaquah) or in South King County. I'm willing to travel to an appointment, so long as the session is at least one hour in duration.
For the venue, we'll meet in a public location. Usually my tutoring appointments are held at a coffee shop that's convenient to the student. A library or community center could be a good option too.

My experience with Microsoft Access took hold several years ago when I began developing automated solutions for the accounting department of a technology company. An Access database served as the interface between the company's billing system and their general ledger, and the original design of the application was clumsy and inefficient. I re-engineered the database, reworking the VBA-driven forms and creating a more logical sequence of queries, ultimately delivering a solution with improved stability, accuracy, and speed.
Since then, I've managed a variety of other projects involving Access databases, including an effort to migrate a collection of 15 separate Access databases into a single SQL Server application, which involved creating a common data model and converting the Jet SQL modules into T-SQL scripts. I've used MS Access to build standalone applications (typically separating data and logic into distinct databases), as well as to stage prototype queries during the development of SQL Server processes. Also, for many years I've used Access to manage the mailing list for a local non-profit organization.
This extensive history of hands-on experience with MS Access provides me with a solid foundation for tutoring students in this area.
Excel is a tool that I've used in most of my professional career. I work with Excel 2010 every day on the job, and that's the version I also use at home for my personal worksheets. I regularly create PivotTables, VLOOKUPs, and charts, and apply conditional formatting and other spreadsheet features. I've taught Beginning Excel at a community college, and most of my tutoring experience so far has been in Excel.
Early in my professional career, I was skilled using dedicated word-processing equipment to generate documents. MS Word is now my tool of choice for creating and editing documents. At work, I use advanced formatting skills to create and edit documentation, and I regularly use the mail-merge utility to help a non-profit organization. In addition, I've taught an Advanced Word class at the community-college level. This extensive experience gives me the qualifications to tutor students in Word.
I've been building and running SQL scripts for many years. Every database platform supports its own flavor of SQL, and I'm competent in T-SQL (for SQL Server), Oracle, Netezza, and MySQL. I'm also fluent in Brainscript, a Lavastorm proprietary language. I've used a variety of SQL clients to write queries, including Toad, DbVisualizer, SQL Server Management Studio, and Oracle SQL Developer. In addition, I'm well-versed in using the back-end functionality provided in MS Access, business-intelligence tools (including Business Objects), and web scripting.
My expertise in SQL has appropriate depth as well. I'm skilled at writing subqueries, complex CASE statements, and inner and outer joins, and I use functions in the native language of the platform being queried. Most of my experience has centered around SELECT queries, but I'm also comfortable writing and executing statements in Data Definition Language (DDL) and Data Manipulation Language (DML).
