The best part of teaching is getting to share my love of science with students, and see them get excited about it! I have a PhD in integrative biology and work as a marine biologist/mammalogist. I have published in scientific journals and presented at international scientific conferences. Throughout my career, I have continued to teach as an adjunct and tutor. I also taught at a charter high school for 2.5 years serving 10th-12th grade. With my experiences conducting research in the field and the lab, I bring a unique perspective that helps students relate to many scientific topics, and lets them see how science is done outside of the classroom.
My teaching experience includes a variety of science classes: biology, environmental science, ecology, anatomy, marine biology and chemistry. I can help your student with any level of biological science class (elementary to college) and chemistry (middle school to college chemistry 1 and 2). Science can be challenging, but also fun. Incorporating both of these aspects into the tutoring sessions helps keep students engaged and wanting to learn more. Students will be given tasks each week to complete between sessions that will help them master the material and strengthen their study skills (which can help in other subject areas as well).
In addition to science, I have played the clarinet for 25 years. I was principal clarinet in college and in various community bands and orchestras and was selected for many honor/all-state bands/orchestras in high school. I have also played semi-professionally with various groups in Florida. Music is a wonderful gift and I love to help students develop their skills. Each week students will have specific pieces and skills to work on in between sessions. During each lesson we will work hard, but also have time to just jam - playing duets or other fun pieces.
I have a 24 hr cancellation policy, but will work with the student to schedule a make up class (usually within 2 weeks of the missed class). I am happy to travel to a student's house, library, or other quiet area, or students are welcome to come to my house, whichever is more convenient.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach your goals!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a PhD in Integrative Biology and have taught a variety of biology classes at both the college and high school level. I taught 10-12 grade honors Biology and other science courses for almost 3 years at a charter high school, Clark Advanced Learning Center, helping every student succeed in the state given End of Course Exam. At the college level I have taught dual-enrolled high school students, traditional college students and those returning to school in a variety of biological classes and labs.
As a research scientist I bring unique experiences that help students connect with biology. This helps them want to learn, and see that biology can be fun too!
Review from previous biology and marine biology student:
I would like to thank you for being such an amazing teacher and helping me with everything. You really made me realize my love for marine animals. I am now looking into becoming a marine veterinarian. You truly inspired me with your love and knowledge for them. I do not think I can thank you enough.
I taught Honors Chemistry for grades 10-12 for almost 3 years at a charter high school, Clark Advanced Learning Center. I also assisted the many dual enrolled students in their first year of chemistry at the college level (at Indian River State College) during this time.
A review from a parent of one of my students:
Thank you for teaching my son Chemistry. He had a great experience and learned a lot - and some great study skills too. To love learning is the best any parent could ask for. You were his favorite teacher. We need more great teachers like you!
