Bio

I have spent more than 30 years teaching because, as someone who loves to learn, I love to see the pleasure and empowerment students feel when they are successful. I graduated Magna Cum Laude in education, with a strong science background. I continue to study subjects that interest me: having learned two additional foreign languages, attained instructor level in Tai Chi and Shaolin Gung Fu, and have added the ukelele and saxophone to my musical pastimes. I am a licensed teacher in Illinois and Washington.

For the past seven years I have been substitute teaching. I am one of the rare teachers that can work with any age student; I substitute from kindergarten to high school. The bulk of my teaching career was in elementary and middle school education. I am currently tutoring math, science, and writing to high school, middle and elementary students. I can instruct all elementary and middle school subjects as well as most high school subjects.

I expect my tutoring students to be prepared to work at each session. We may work with materials being used by the classroom teacher (completing homework, studying for quizzes and tests, reviewing assignments, etc.), or I may recommend or provide supplementary materials as needed, or both. My goal is to help each student be successful and gain confidence. A student's progress should be reflected in improved grades and greater proficiency. I expect students to take responsibility for their learning commensurate to their age level and encourage parent involvement and feedback.

I can work with students either in their own home (with a parent or guardian on premises), or in another public location, such as a library or coffee house. I will provide and expect to receive 24 notice for changes or cancellations of sessions. Of course, the unexpected can sometimes occur, and I am happy to work with my clients to find a suitable solution.

I have taught all subject areas for elementary education, including art, music, P.E., and specialized in math and science when available. Excellent Tutor

My son came to the US from New Zealand mid term. Because of the late start and the less than ideal math curriculum in New Zealand, he had a great deal of catching up to do. Cathy immediately identified the areas of deficiency and very effectively gained my son's respect and attention. With Cathy's help, he's been making rapid progress. Cathy commands attention and directs focus while building confidence and self-esteem. Correcting deficiencies and building confidence is a delicate balance that Cathy accomplishes well. She has a no-nonsense, get-down-to-business, step-wise approach. She is always punctual and dedicated to purpose.

My 6th grade daughter has been seeing Cathleen since last August for math and since February we have added a day for writing. My daughter enjoys her sessions with Cathy and I appreciate Cathy's professionalism and willing to work around activities and vacations. She is incredibly prepared and is prepared with other lessons they can work on if she doesn't have homework or a writing assignment. She assigns homework if she feels she needs a little help in a certain area. It is difficult for me to help my daughter with her homework because she is not interested in what I have to say, and everything is an argument so I am grateful to have found someone who works well with my daughter and is as flexible. After a family vacation, she had some math that she was struggling with and I emailed about a session on the weekend and she was willing to accommodate our schedule and help her. Cathy is very knowledgeable in both areas of math and writing. When we began our sessions in August with Cathy I wasn't sure if she would be a great fit for my daughter's personality or mine as I was more interested in one on one tutoring (more paper and less computer) but Cathy was willing to do whatever I wanted and found alternative materials to work with. My daughter after several sessions began to develop a relationship with her and almost never complains about going. I thought we would have an issue when I added a day for writing but she was fine with it and I truly believe its because of the relationship they have built. Every child is different and If you have a child who just wants help with a subject and not a relationship (maybe they are embarrassed about having a tutor) I highly recommend Cathy as she understands, recognizes strengths and weaknesses, personalities and exactly what each individual student needs. One last thing, I appreciate the reviews I receive after each session, it allows me to know exactly how the lesson went from the tutor stand point.

Great Math Tutor

I feel so lucky that we finally found a wonderful math tutor for our son who is in the 5th grade. She explains math concepts in a simple manner, making what at first seemed confusing into an easy to tackle problem. She is not just a great tutor but a great coach-urging him on when he wants to give up, and keeping him working at an appropriate pace. She is flexible and will help him with math homework and/or create her own curriculum based on what my son needs to work on. All in all, I am very happy that Cathy is our math tutor!
