Hello! In 2015 I graduated magna cum laude with both a BS in both Physics and Chemistry, and am pursuing a higher degree in the Chemistry Graduate program at Georgetown University. I have six years of tutoring experience at the college level in addition to being a Teacher's Assistant in laboratory settings.

At Georgetown, I was Teaching Assistant for first and second semester General Chemistry. This position involved both demonstrating and monitoring laboratory experiments as well as leading recitation sessions twice a week. I prefer to have a dynamic teaching style in my recitations - I would adjust my daily plan to suit the needs of the class, whether that is giving short lectures on a topic that was not understood well, going over problems and problem-solving strategies, or bringing in worksheets and "live polling" flashcards for an interactive student experience. My favorite part of working with students is helping them work through the material, encouraging their curiosity, and helping them understand topics until things "click" into place. While I am on hiatus from Georgetown (extenuating circumstances required a leave), I have been able to focus more on tutoring.

As I have ADD myself, I understand that sometimes concepts take more time to work through and that different learning strategies are often needed. For example, in many physics problems, a student might have access to all the necessary equations but needs help seeing how the pieces fit together. Sometimes the key to a problem is as simple as finding a way to visualize all the information given. I am a big fan of diagrams and tables of known and unknown values, and cannot stress the importance of units enough! (Really though, many problems arise due to errors in unit conversion or using inappropriate units.) Other times I have needed to verbalize the concepts and explain the equations in ways that make sense to a more auditory learner. Most often, it comes down to working through practice problems, identifying weak spots, and working on problem solving strategies.

Additionally, as I was a two-sport collegiate athlete, I recognize that schedules can be hectic, and have been known to do late night tutoring sessions or even tutor over Skype if that's what was necessary. I understand that schedules can be hectic, and will do my best to find a time that is mutually convenient. As such, my availability listed is more of a guideline, and can be negotiated.

In short, I do my best to help students reach a higher level of understanding in their courses. There is nothing better than seeing the proverbial light-bulb turn on when things start making sense.

While at college, I was a physics tutor for college level physics for three years. Since then, I have predominantly tutored chemistry, at both collegiate and high school levels. Aside from tutoring chemistry and physics, I have a keen eye for details. I have edited many papers for my friends and students, and even edited a doctoral thesis!

Chemistry,

I have tutored General Chemistry and Physical Chemistry, performed Physical Chemistry research at Saint Michael's College (Summer 2013), and graduated magna cum laude with degrees in Chemistry and Physics from Saint Michael's College in Colchester, VT. Additionally, I helped found the Chemistry Club on campus at St. Mike's and was involved with performing "chemical magic shows" as part of our club's outreach to local schools. These shows focused not just on the amazing aspects of chemistry but also on explaining the "magic" in a way that school-age children can understand.
Physics

Physics

I have three years of experience tutoring college-level physics, in addition to being a teaching assistant in the accompanying lab sections and performing research at an REU program at the University of Oregon (Summer 2014). As a TA, I was responsible for the proper functioning and set up of the equipment and was on-hand to ensure that any questions were promptly resolved. As a TA and a tutor, I focus not so much on telling students the answer as I do on directing them towards it. I have found that comprehension is increased when they make the connections themselves and understand the reasoning behind it instead of viewing the answer as something to be memorized.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Shannon did a great job of making the subject problems easily understandable for my daughter. She enjoyed working with Shannon and was so excited to text me her score she received from her latest test! We will definitely continue to work with Shannon.

Patient and reliable

She has been working with my son on physics. He was at D- and right now he has a B-.. 4 weeks left at school so hopeful he can pull a B or C out of an incredibly hard class. Shannon has been great in explaining in detail and having him show he understands. Two thumbs up

Making a difference, one lesson at a time!

Shannon has been helping my daughter, who is a sophomore, understand chemistry better. They have reviewed several chapters in preparation for an upcoming test and her help is invaluable! My daughter comes home confident and reassured that she will do well because she knows the material. This is Shannon's doing entirely.

A great tutor with patience.

Shannon has helped my daughter on her Physics recently. My daughter is very satisfied with the class and like to continue with Shannon. I am pleased my daughter can find a good tutor to help on her school works.

Great teacher and tutor

Shannon helped my high school junior understand key concepts of physics. She took the time to determine what he knew and what he didn't know. Good communicator, friendly, patient, and calm. Will definitely call on Shannon again.

Very knowledgeable and patient tutor

My 10th grade daughter is struggling with chemistry. Shannon has met with her twice, for two hours each time. With most of her tutoring experience at the college level, I was a little hesitant that she'd be a good fit for my high schooler, but I was pleasantly wrong. She is very knowledgeable and patient, making sure my daughter is understanding the specific concepts she's explaining. When Shannon began with my daughter her chemistry grade was on the edge of failing. With the two sessions with Shannon she has improved by an entire grade! I plan to continue with regular tutoring sessions for my daughter, and would definitely recommend her to anyone struggling with chemistry.
