About Kathryn

I have been a tutor for over twenty years. I started in college as an after-school volunteer working with the Boys and Girls Club. My first paid tutoring job was for a first-grader at a bilingual school in Puerto Rico. I was in graduate school and needed extra money, but the fulfillment I received from the job was the best reward. I recently learned that little girl is now an architect! That is why I love tutoring. It is a chance for me to help a student more intimately understand her environment.

I have special insight into the standardized test world. I worked as a reader at ACT headquarters. This unique experience helped me understand firsthand exactly what is expected of students from their submitted exams.

I love learning (I must since I endured 8 years of graduate school and then decide I want to TEACH for a living!) I graduated from college Magna Cum Laude with a double major in History and in Sociology and a minor in Spanish. I continued on to graduate school where I earned a Masters in US History, a Certificate in Gender Studies, and a Ph.D. in Latin American History.

I like nothing more than to help make learning fun for someone else. If I can't make it fun, at least I hope I can get you through with minimal pain and that you find you actually gained something worthwhile in the process.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I have special insight into the ACT exam because I worked as a reader at ACT headquarters. I understand firsthand exactly what is expected of students from their submitted exams. It sounds cliche, but reading is fundamental. It is not just about going from one word to another, but actually understanding how the words relate to the others in the sentence and the paragraph and the page. As a college professor I see the consequences of students who cannot contextualize the written word or who take the meaning at face value without critically analyzing the meaning. The ACT reading portion is looking for students who can break down reading material and critically understanding what they are absorbing. My work as a college professor in a writing intensive school and a long-time tutor of young students can help you learn these skills.

American History

My Ph.D. is in Latin American history and my Masters degree is in US History. I studied with some of the top U.S. historians in the nation. I had to buy an award-winning history book for a class reading list my first semester of graduate school. Walking in to the first day of class I discovered the author would be my professor for the semester! He ended up being my advisor and mentor throughout graduate school and continues to be an amazing mentor. I maintain contact with top scholars in many historical fields through conferences and research. History is my passion and I have devoted my life to helping young people develop a love for the world around them.

Anthropology

While anthropology is not my primary field, history utilizes literature and skills from the field of anthropology to help us better understand the cultures we study. My Ph.D. is in Latin American history and society and my Masters degree is in US History. I am a Duke University trained social historian which means I studied with some of the finest scholars of European, US, and Latin American history, cultural anthropology, and world literature in the nation and I continue to maintain contact with top scholars in many fields through conferences and research. Social and cultural history is my passion and I have devoted my life to helping young people develop a love for the world around them.

Geography

I always give geography quizzes in my history classes so students can understand how people and regions are related spatially. Geography plays an important role in politics, culture, history and so many other human interactions. Reading maps and atlases is a skill that is being lost in this world of cellphones and gps trackers. I hope to cultivate this dying art and raise enthusiasm for the inter-connectivity of the world around us.

As a college professor I see the consequences of students who cannot contextualize the written word or who take the meaning at face value without critically analyzing the meaning. To properly read for academics one needs to break down reading material and critically understanding what one is absorbing. My work as a college professor in a writing intensive school and a long-time tutor of young students can help you learn these skills.
I can also help with elementary age students. This is the best age to help develop a love for reading. I have successfully tutored first and second grade students in fundamental reading areas. I love to read and want children to discover the amazing worlds that open up to them in the pages of a book.
