About David

I am a second-year student at the University of Vermont and I am available for tutoring math. I finished AP Calculus with a 5 on both portions of the AP Calculus BC exam (this curriculum roughly aligns with a traditional Calculus I- Calculus II sequence, with AB being Calculus I and BC being Calculus II). At UVM, I have taken Calculus III, Number Theory, Graph Theory, Ordinary Differential Equations, and Chaos Theory. I have taken Linear Algebra as a visiting student at UC Berkeley. I am willing to teach at any level up to and including college-level or AP Calculus (excluding AP statistics), as well as possibly advanced math not covered by the school curriculum. I have experience tutoring through a Vermont program called Teenopps and as a volunteer at my high school's learning center, as well as with private tutoring, and I have also received a few distinctions in math (2-time AMC School Winner, 3-time Certificate of Merit recipient on the UVM Math Prize Exam, member of Vermont Math All-Stars in 2013 and 2014, a 15 person team for a national math competition). I received 800s on both the Math Level 1 and Math Level 2 Subject Tests. I consider Math to be my biggest passion.

Another one of my passions is Latin. I took it through Latin IV in high school, and took both semesters of the Survey of Latin Literature sequence at UVM. I received a 730 on SAT subject test for Latin, and a "cum laude" on the National Latin Exam. I have experience tutoring Latin as a volunteer at my high school's learning center.

I am also available to tutor for standardized tests, especially the ACT. As mentioned before, I received 800s on Math Level 1 and Math Level 2 Subject Tests, and a 730 for Latin. As for the ACT, I received a 34 composite score, 36 in reading, 35 in Math, 35 in English multiple choice, 31 on the Science section, and a 10 on the essay (which made for a 33 combined English score). For this score, I was nominated for the Presidential Scholars Program.

I try not to teach my students just to be able to parrot back right answers to specific problems or memorize a seemingly meaningless list of steps to go through. I want people to be able to learn how to think about a question, making much of the memorization as unnecessary as possible. I prefer tutoring on Sundays, but would be able to accommodate some weekday afternoon appointments as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I received a 35 on the ACT English section and a 10 on the essay.

ACT Math

I received a 35 on the ACT Math section.

ACT Reading

I received a 36 on the Reading portion of the ACT.

ACT Science

I received a 31 on the Science portion of the ACT.

Discrete Math

I have taken two college courses in Discrete Mathematics: Number Theory and Graph Theory. I have experience tutoring it in the context of competitions like Mathcounts and the American Mathematics Contests, where Discrete Math plays a large role. In addition, it is the area of Mathematics in which I am spending most of my time.

Latin

I took Latin in high school, tutored my friends informally and volunteered to tutor at my school's learning center. I took the subject through Latin IV, and am now in my second semester of my university's two-semester Survey of Latin Literature sequence. I received a 730 on the SAT and a "cum laude" on the National Latin Exam.
