I have been a special education paraprofessional for the last 8 years and have found it to be the most rewarding job I have ever had. It is such a great feeling when I see students faces light up and they exclaim "now I get it."
I specialize in tutoring students in elementary and middle school math, science and reading. My goals are to help young people become comfortable doing what at first seems difficult, while challenging them to do more than they think they can. Lessons are accompanied by homework and followed up with assessments and progress reports. If at any time a student feels overwhelmed we will discuss modifications to ease any perceived excess burden. To do my best at helping a student I encourage input from them, parents and classroom teachers.
As a full time educator and a father of a high school student, I have some limitations on my time. Although I do ask for a 24 hour notification of cancellation, I try to be flexible with rescheduling class dates and times.
Arrangements have been made for a quiet room locally where students can learn and study without undue distractions. I am also willing to travel to a location of your choice if that is more convenient.
I look forward to helping you become successful at those things which seem tough right now. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have spent the last 7 years providing remedial help to k-8 special needs students. As a special education paraprofessional I have worked with children whose learning disabilities ranged from non- verbal autism to ADHD to below average processing skills.
Since 2010 I have provided remedial help and in class support to mainly K-7 students, covering a wide variety of subjects including math, science, reading, writing, and history. I have also worked with autistic and behaviorally-challenged children, as well as providing 1:1 support for special needs students.
Starting the 2014/15 school year I spend approximately 10 hours per week helping kindergarteners with social skills, introduction to reading, writing, counting, music and art.
