About Cheri

From the day I graduated from high school, enrolled in my first undergrad courses, and found my first job, I knew exactly what I wanted to do--teach. I found my niche through working as a camp counselor, substitute teacher, individual assistant, behavior specialist, and behavior consultant. My light shines the brightest when working individually with others.

I have a Master's degree in Education and am currently a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Whether you are on the Autism Spectrum, need support with English, Writing, Communication, or want to reduce or replace habits and unwanted behavior, I can utilize my expertise to achieve virtually any learning goal! I believe strongly in building relationships before requiring hard work out of anyone and will get to know you as a person in order to meet your needs as a learner. I require specific goals to work on and have high expectations in terms of meeting those goals.

I do not have a cancellation policy; however, would like to be notified of any cancellations as soon as it is known. I am happy to travel for tutoring lessons and open to doing so in the comforts of your own home, any public space (that is conducive to learning), or in my own home in St. Albans.

I am excited to hear from you and to support you in meeting your identified goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

In addition to the required courses I took in order to complete my Master's degree in Education, I also completed several courses related to special education and diverse learners. The alternative school that I have worked in has given me numerous opportunities and experience in working with students with ADHD/ADD and other co-morbid diagnoses.

Aside from my professional experience, I have been with the love of my life, Dan, for 10 years. Dan has ADHD, and we have worked together and I have learned through being his partner about the effects of ADHD. The information I learned in school coupled with personal experience has helped me learn and implement various coping strategies and given me a true understanding of what the symptoms of ADHD look like and how difficult it can be to complete daily tasks and maintain relationships with others.

Related Coursework includes: Educational Studies, Characteristics of Diverse Learners, Critical and Cultural Perspectives in Education.

Additionally, my undergraduate degree was in English with a minor in Secondary Education. As a result, I participated in many courses aimed at supporting students with diverse needs and special education as well as completed student teaching.

Aspergers

I found my niche in working with individuals with Asperger's/Autism Spectrum Disorder at my first "real" job at an alternative school working as an individual assistant. During this time, I realized how stereotyped my view was of this unique and under-served this population was and became somewhat of an advocate.

Over a course of 4 years, I grew more and more passionate for those with Asperger's/ASD, morphed my first "real" job into a career (from individual assistant to behavior specialist to behavior consultant) and completed my Master's Degree in Education (Applied Behavior Analysis) from Johnson State College.

Completed graduate coursework as it relates to Asperger's and Autism include: Applied Behavior Analysis 1, 2, and 3, Discrete Trial Learning, Research Methods in Applied Behavior Analysis

Autism

I have a Master's Degree in Education (Applied Behavior Analysis) from Johnson State College plus 4 years working directly with individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder through a designated mental health agency.

Completed graduate coursework as it relates to Autism include: Applied Behavior Analysis 1, 2, and 3, Discrete Trial Learning, and Research Methods in Applied Behavior Analysis.

Public Speaking

I took a public speaking course as part of undergrad work. Part of my professional job entails public speaking at conferences, in small groups, with parents, educational professionals, and other community partners. I speak publicly on a daily basis and speak at large conferences for professionals.

Special Needs

In order to complete my Master's degree in Education, I completed several courses related to special education and diverse learners. Additionally, I worked in an Alternative School that serves students with various disabilities through a designated mental health agency.

Currently, I provide applied behavior analysis services to children under 5 years old and collaborate with school systems, parents, and other professionals in developing treatment goals.

Related Coursework includes: Educational Studies, Characteristics of Diverse Learners, Critical and Cultural Perspectives in Education.

My undergraduate degree is in English with a minor in Secondary Education. As a result, I participated in many courses about students with diverse needs and special education as well as completed student teaching.

Study Skills

I am proficient in study skills myself as I have completed undergraduate and graduate degrees. During my undergrad, I taught study skills to freshmen and students who were part of TRiO.
