I am a Vermont Certified Teacher with over ten years experience in Education as both traditional classroom teacher, and as one to one Instructional Assistant. I am a patient and caring educator who believes all students can and should be able to benefit from any and all resources available to them. I have worked with many grade levels, and various academic subjects.
My tutoring experience has spanned many years. I spent several years working with the local Learning Center. We arranged for me to work out of our local chapter of the Boys and Girls Clubs. They were kind enough to let me use one of their offices for after school sessions.
I have assisted students with a wide variety of subjects, but math is by far, the most prevalent subject where kids need help. It is often just helping them get a better grasp of the basics, before they can comfortably move on. I work hard to establish a rapport with my students. Doing this helps them to feel comfortable with me, and allows me to better offer them academic help.
My education includes a Bachelor of Science degree from Castleton University in Castleton, Vermont. I majored in Business, with a specific concentration in Marketing. I then returned to school again to earn my Vermont Teaching Certificate. I chose Social Studies as a concentration, due to a strong interest in Geography and History. My love of Geography came from living around the world.
I know that many students are not always exactly jumping at the idea of tutoring. It generally means another hour or so of academics, after they have already put in a full day at school, I understand this, but I also know that for most of them, it is their parents and or family that wants them to have this extra help. I go out of my way to explain this to my students, and also do my best to make the tutoring sessions interesting, enjoyable, and informative. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Many of the students I have tutored in the past have asked about study habits. Many of them have lots of distractions in their lives, and I discuss with them how to minimize these distractions. Obviously I do not have control over their situations at home, but I do let them know how to maximize quiet time at home, or school in order to study. I often show them a program I learned years ago called Cornell Notes. I is a system that divides a page into sections, and assists in note taking, and questioning skills. It works better with older students, such as Middle and High School.
