I have a license through the state of Vermont in elementary education. I have experience teaching first through fourth grades. I am also certified through the National Institute of Learning Development as an educational therapist. NILD educational therapy differs from tutoring in that cognitive and perceptual weaknesses are strengthened to support independent learning. This approach is individualized and intensive mediated learning. The decision about whether a child needs educational therapy or tutoring would be decided depending on the child's needs.
I also have a degree in music from Ithaca College, specifically piano. I have had a piano studio for 20 years and students have ranged in age from preschool to retirement age. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified by the National Institute for Learning Development as an educational therapist. I have worked one on one with students with autism for four years with great success. NILD techniques use a variety materials that develop core academic skills and thinking abilities.
