I have previously taught middle school (grades 6-8) math in the NYC DOE and at the New York City Charter School of the Arts, including Algebra 1. I taught for 5 years and taught small groups, co-teaching groups, and full cohorts. I also tutored on the side for most of that time. I am familiar supporting students with diverse needs, including pushing students to more advanced mathematics. I also was the Director of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) at the Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School where I coached math and science teachers, helping them develop a new curriculum and improve their teaching abilities. Both schools used curriculums aligned with the Common Core.
I have three degrees:
•BA in Sociology and Business from University of Southern California
•MA in Special Education from St. Johns University
•MA in School Leadership from Harvard University
I have always taught math from a place of empathy – I struggled with middle school math! When I teach and tutor I put an emphasis on:
•The essential specific vocabulary. Knowing what your teacher is talking about is half the battle, and I expect my students to be able to use precise mathematical vocabulary.
•That Algebra is a language and artform – while there might be one “right” answer, there are many way to get to that answer.
•Staying organized, both in a mathematics notebook and in solving equations. Math is difficult to do when things are messy and unorganized!
I might not make you be able to love math, but I can help you through it!
