About Andrew

During 35 years of teaching English courses at colleges and universities in five states, I helped students develop good proofreading skills along with ways to improve effectiveness of sentences and paragraphs. I stressed the importance of including concrete, detailed examples to help the reader more clearly visualize assertions of the writer. In Business Communication courses and seminars for state and government agencies, I focused on communicating in clear, concise English to the appropriate audience in both written and oral communications (U. S. style). Most classes I taught involved MLA and/or APA research projects. My main goal was and is to enable people to produce effective communication in college and business. I also taught English skills for more than two years at a private conversation school in Japan. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I help students with grammar preparation and use of writing stages to respond to the ACT essay within the time limit, taking into account changes made in the exam as of 2016.

ACT Reading

I help students with grammar preparation and strategies for the multiple choice sections in English skills. 35 years of teaching English skills in American
colleges and universities of five states (plus more than two years in Japan) have shown me what students need to know and how to help them,

I begin by asking the student to write a short essay. I mark up the essay, highlighting errors, strengths and weaknesses, then send it back to the student before our first meeting (no charge for this or anything else done at home). During the online session, I have the student take notes on all aspects of a grammatical problem area, such as pronoun problems. Before our next session, I send the student a practice quiz on pronouns, which I mark up and send back before our next session. In addition to grammar, we go over ways to get through the multiple choice section within the time limit.

Grammar

A typical online session focuses on an aspect of grammar, such as proper/improper use of pronouns. I make sure that the student takes notes that he/she will understand later. We discuss how to develop a short essay (about two pages) on a topic of the student's choice, using a method of development, such as Cause/Effect essay. After the lesson, I send the student a Practice Quiz on pronouns. Before the next lesson, he/she sends me the essay and a scanned copy of the quiz. I mark up the quiz and essay (including which techniques worked especially well in the essay), scan and send them back to the student so we can discuss them in detail next time. During that lesson, I have the student mark up the printed copy of the practice quiz, making sure he/she understands proper pronoun use. I then ask the student to take notes on another area of grammar, such as marks of punctuation. We go over all aspects of the marked up essay, including what examples and details might have improved the essay. Then, we discuss requirements of the next essay, such as Analysis. After this lesson, I will send a Pronoun Quiz (similar to the Practice Quiz) to make certain he/she understands. I will also send a Punctuation Practice Quiz.

Public Speaking

Two of the college courses I taught, Business Writing and Advanced Composition, required a 10-15 minute oral/visual presentation on a topic of the student's choice. I coached the classes on how to deliver effective speeches to a group.

SAT Writing

I help students with grammar preparation and use of writing stages to respond to the SAT essay within the time limit, taking into account changes made in the exam as of 2016.

I start by asking the student to write a one-page essay so I can assess the student's strengths and weaknesses. I then prepare focused grammar lessons to ensure the student's understanding. Using an SAT style short essay, I ask the student to respond with a timed analysis of the writer's argument (strengths and weaknesses), according to SAT standards.

Study Skills

During my years of teaching freshman level composition courses in colleges, I have seen that the majority of my students lacked the basic skills in grammar and writing strategies to achieve high grades. They had to work very hard to learn what they had not learned in high school to become good college writers. To have entered college with these abilities would have been a big advantage. Most of my students learned quickly enough to develop into good writers, especially the ones who took advantage of my one-on-one help. Learning to conduct research in stages was especially important to them.
