About Raymond

I am a retired engineer with disciplines in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and with MSA degree also. Excellent skills in most 1st-12th grade subject matter. 2 yrs as Assistant Boy Scout Troop Leader, 20+ yrs as a Fish and Wildlife Instructor for ages 9 through adult, 3 yrs as a driver for SSTA (which has a very comprehensive background check)providing transportation and door-to-door assistance for people with special needs.

I enjoy working with all people, children, teens and adults. I've tutored algebra/word problems and trig for a friend's son to prepare him for Vermont Technical College. I understand that word problems can present special challenges, and I can help others to reason the way through them, and prepare them for a proper approach to test taking.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra may appear confusing initially, but when understood, it becomes obvious that it is used daily in just about every activity we do. While we don't think of it as algebra, we use it as we calculate gas mileage, make change, cook, etc. In my different working environments and personal hobbies, I've come across just about every different application for algebra that I can imagine, and have found that it's easy and fun to use.

Elementary Math

Elementary math is the very basis of everyday life. My 35 yr. career as an engineer, and my personal hobbies, have made daily use of these very basic fundamentals of math. I find mathematics to be a pure and logical thought process. While challenging, it is also very much fun to use.

Elementary Science

As a child, I had an interest in all types of science. That interest developed into a 35 yr. career as an engineer. Elementary Science is the basis of all engineering fields.

English

As a child, both at home and in school, I was taught to use the correct word choices in my speech and writings. This includes correctly choosing between adjective and adverb as descriptors, selection of the proper singular vs. plural version of the verb to suit the noun, and which Nominative or Objective case to use in the subject or predicate. Unfortunately, today's daily speech has strayed from these English basics, but I attempt to always use the proper wording regardless of the audience.

Geometry

I studied high school geometry and more advanced geometry in a 2-year technical school. I've tutored a friend's son to improve his math skills for entry into VTC. In addition to helping with the basic math skills necessary for successful completion of that technical math course, I also provided much needed instruction on the technique of solving word problems.

Grammar

I learned grammar in elementary and high school. I found it to be enjoyable, and very logical. Success in my career path has been dependent upon correct grammatical usage for both my technical and personal writing.

Prealgebra

I have BSME and MSEE degrees. Extensive training in all aspects of mathematics was required to earn either of those two degrees. I've used this and other disciplines of mathematics throughout my entire working life.

Reading

I am not a speed reader, as my studies have always conditioned me to have thorough comprehension of what I've read. To accomplish this, reading rate is established to allow processing of every detail being presented.
As the goals for recreational reading and instructional reading differ, so will the speed at which they are read.

Spelling

Spelling has always been a priority of mine. In elementary school, I was consistently one of the last standing in a spelling bee. I've worked as a technical writer for the Nuclear Navy and throughout life, I've prided myself in correct spelling in everything I've written

Study Skills

After high school, I attended Wentworth Institute to earn an Associate degree in Electronics Technology. Next, I went for a year to VTC to earn an Associate degree in Mechanical Technology. Later, while working full time at IBM, I completed the requirements for a BS in Mechanical Engineering, an MS in Electrical Engineering and, from St. Michael's College, a Master's in Administration. Over the years, I've learned the study skills that were necessary to accomplish those varied degrees, all the while working full time.
