About Mike

I've been tutoring, off and on, for the past 30 years -- including several years homeschooling my kids -- and really enjoy helping other people understand new things. My approach is always to emphasize the fundamentals, giving the student the tools to understand what underlies the more complex topics: the how and why of things, rather than simply steps that need to be memorized. I try to approach the topic in the way best suited to the student's way of learning, engaging in a conversation rather than a lecture.

With a Master's degree in computer science and almost 30 years of industry experience (including a nine-year stint at Apple), I'm here to help you get started with a new PC or tablet, learn how to use a word processor or a Web browser, or learn the basics of computer programming and software engineering. Over the years, I've also put my minor in mathematics to use, tutoring algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and both differential and integral calculus.

I'm a photography buff, and have been working with SLRs and DSLRs for a couple of decades. As a member and officer of my local camera club, I've given talks on a variety of topics including depth of field and astrophotography, and am looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience to help you to get the most out of your camera and computer software.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C

I have both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in computer science. C was my second major programming language, and I wrote system software, both low-level drivers and user interface code, in C for various employers over the past 30 years, including Apple.

I taught introductory programming at the university level for two semesters, and homeschooled one of my sons in programming. My approach is, generally, to concentrate on algorithms and fundamental concepts rather than the specific syntax of a given language, but, obviously, if language specifics are what's desired, then I'm more than happy to concentrate on that.

C++

I have both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in computer science, and have been writing code for various employers, including Apple, in C and C++ for the past 30 years.

Computer Programming

Computer Science

I have both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in computer science. My education covered data structures, logic, algorithm design and analysis, operating systems, complexity theory, artificial intelligence, graphics, and various programming languages and paradigms.

In addition to a solid theoretical background, I've acquired real-world experience over the past 30 years as a software engineer for numerous companies, including Apple.

I taught introductory programming and computer science at the university level for two semesters, and homeschooled one of my sons in programming.

Fortran

My early years were spent writing FORTRAN IV and Fortran 99 code for defense contractors. I have both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in computer science.

Macintosh

I've been using Macs since 1985, and writing software for them for the past 20 years or more, including a 9-year stint working for Apple Computer. I still own nothing but Mac computers, and keep up to date with the latest OS releases. I use them extensively for my photographic and other work.

Pascal

I have both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in computer science, and have been writing code for various employers, including Apple, for the past 30 years. My first programming language at university was Pascal, and I taught introductory programming using Pascal at the university level for two semesters; I also homeschooled one of my sons in programming and wrote software for my own personal computers using Pascal.

Photography

I've been taking photographs using SLRs, point-and-shoot, and DSLRs for at least 30 years. During the past 15 years, I've been using exclusively digital cameras, and for the last 5 years or so I've been a member and officer of the Kidlington Camera Club, where I've given talks on basic photographic concepts and astrophotography, and have been a judge at local photographic contests. I'm also well-versed in digital image processing as it relates to photographs, and so am able to guide students in the use of their computer software to improve their images.
