About John

My approach to tutoring is a reflection of my education and experiences thus far in my life. Studying philosophy and religion as an undergraduate provided me with a strong foundation in writing, study skills, reflection and analysis. Most importantly my mind and heart were opened to big ideas that left me questioning where I can make a difference. I decided that counseling would be a means to support others who are seeking direction and insight into their issues. I earned a Master's degree in counseling from Saint Michael's College. My desire to teach led me to earn a certificate of advanced graduate study in special education. Other coursework and training that I have undertaken has focused on educational leadership, conflict resolution, differentiating instruction and understanding by design, as well as mathematics, reading, writing, science and social science.

I have had the opportunity to work with students of all ages in almost all areas of academic study. Skill levels have varied in math, reading and writing but I have also worked with students in grade level classes in science, language arts, mathematics and social science. I have worked with students one on one, in small groups, and team teaching in content area courses. The majority of my teaching experiences have been with students in grades 6-12. I have integrated my skills in differentiating instruction and understanding by design. This has, helped me to tailor content to the needs of individual students. I have over twenty years of experience with unique learners.

My tutoring approach is learner centered. It is important for me to utilize the strengths of each student and then present content and skills in a manner that develops understanding and long term retention. It is my goal to focus on the process of learning as well as content. My experiences with unique learners will allow me to tailor learning to your unique profile. I will work with students with issues related to disabilities with a focus on improving executive functioning and study skills to promote current and long term success. However, I am happy to work with students of all backgrounds and ages.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have studied integrated math and worked with high school students for 15 years. Integrated Math includes Aldabra, Geometry, Statistics. and other newer fields of mathematics. My students covered the spectrum from learning disabled to advanced for their age group. Additionally, I enjoy getting to know a student's learning type and share my enthusiasm for the study of mathematics.
