Messiah College (Biology)
Uniformed Services University (PhD)
I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in Psychology, and in 2013 I finished my PhD program in Neuroscience. I am also certified to teach 7-12 grade science in the state of Vermont.
My desire for teaching developed from my many years tutoring students from elementary to graduate school. Working with students on a one-to-one basis is something that brings me a lot of fulfillment. Seeing the joy in their eyes when they finally grasp a concept is the ultimate reward and what made me decide to pursue a career as an educator.
Because each student is different, I take the time to get to know my students’ learning style so that I can adapt my tutoring to their needs. I enjoy the challenge of having to find different ways to explain the same concept to different students and work with the student, the parents, and teachers in order to help each student develop academically.
I can teach a variety of biology-related classes. I love science and I love to learn and I enjoy the challenge of having to come up with different explanations for the same concept until I can find one that makes sense to the student. I really enjoy helping students when they feel they are "stuck" and can't understand a topic they are studying. I also enjoy helping others organize their academic lives so that they can be more productive and less frustrated. I am very patient and work to adapt my explanations to the student's style and needs.
I have recently tutored students in the following classes:
EHS: Chemistry 100/200 and Biology 100/200
UVM: Chemistry and Biopsychology
Johnson State College: Intro to Chemistry
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about my background, the subjects I teach, or if you would like to schedule a tutoring session. I look forward to hearing from you!
*** I also tutor small groups (2-4 people). In this case the rate is $25/person. This is a great option if you like to learn with your peers!*** I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in Psychology, and in 2013 I finished my PhD program in Neuroscience. When I first approached Rachel I was skeptical about my abilities to learn the material in my chemistry class, but after only a couple of sessions with her I not only had more confidence in my learning capacities, but also felt that I could successfully manage the course. Rachel is patient, understanding, and encouraging. She prepares for each session beforehand and provides additional worksheets and homework assignments in addition to creating helpful guides specifically catered to my learning needs and methods. Rachel provides an open and nonjudgmental learning space in which inquiry is encouraged and mistakes are never criticized.
She cares about the success of her students and goes out of her way to accommodate their needs. I would highly recommend her for any student looking for chemistry help.
Great Knowledge and knew how to get the big idea across. Was able to explain things in a way that i could understand. Very helpful.
Rachel is doing great work with our chemistry-phobic high school junior. She is fun, thorough and thoughtful. Great tutor.
This session was very good and Rachel seemed to be very receptive of the best way I would understand and learn the concepts. I will be continuing with her.
Rachel is the best tutor, and I know- I've had a lot of tutors. She is very good at explaining everything and if you don't understand she figures out how to explain it so you do understand. She is very patient, too. I know I'll get through Chem because of her.
Rachel has a very strong understanding of biopsychology. She is able to explain concepts in multiple ways and gives relatable examples. She's clear and patient. I am able to understand concepts I previously thought were too confusing based on the clarity of her explanations. She loves the topic and that makes studying more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Out of all sciences, Biology is my first love. Biology is all around us, and I find it fascinating to be able to student and understand its many intricacies. While majoring in Biology in college, I was able to take and tutor a number of Biology related courses and have made my life long goal to learn as much as I can about its number of topics. As a teacher, I have had the pleasure of teaching Biology to a number of students and look forward to continue doing so.
My love for Chemistry developed from my interested in Biology. The two are so interconnected that I did not feel my knowledge would be complete without mastering both subjects. I took many Chemistry courses in both college and graduate school and have taught high school students in a classroom setting as well as tutoring students from high school to graduate level. I like to break down concepts and work with what the student already knows in order to reach understanding of more complex topics.
I took Genetics in college and have privately tutored high school and college student in the subject. I am also a certified science teacher and have taught genetics within the science curriculum. Finally, while working on my PhD, I had to use many genetic techniques which allows me to relate theory to real life applications.
I'm originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and grew up with the language. While in school (elementary, middle, and high), I have taken many grammar courses and feel very comfortable with the language.
