Holding three master's degrees in Education, Art History, and Writing and Literature, I have been teaching for over twenty years. As the owner/director of a private elementary school, I wrote curriculum for a humanities based, writing intensive, experiential learning program serving students from K -7. The school offered community, creative thinking, the chance to experiment and question, and the opportunity for students to grow and develop as individuals. As a teacher in the school, my classroom focus was creative writing, English literature, world history, and art history. Students in my classes grew in confidence as learners, writers and researchers. Today they are lawyers, doctors, writers, and life long learners.
I have tutored extensively in English, writing, history, elementary school subjects and test preparation. Many of my students who were unable to work within the structure of a formal classroom have gone on to be successful in college and adult life in careers such as teaching and film making.
As a college professor in several universities (including Harvard Extension School) I have taught Art History, writing and English. I have worked with first-generation college students, traditional college students, and professionals returning to college for the sheer joy of enhancing their lives.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

With a degree in Art History, I have studied archaeology of all the ancient western cultures - Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Additionally I have worked as an archaeologist's assistant in two separate digs: one in the Anasazi ruins of the American southwest and the other in an Indian/Viking site on the coast of Maine. As a reading tutor for a local tutorial center, I have taught non-readers, struggling readers, and adults to read comfortably and with a feeling of success. Many of my students are now enthusiastic readers.
In earning an MA in education, I took four special needs courses. I have taught at a learning disability school, tutored special needs children for five years, worked one on one for a supervisory union designing and implementing a curriculum for a special needs fifth grader, and worked with dyslexic, Aspergers, ADHD, and emotional problem students.
I worked for several years at the Tutorial Center of Manchester, Vermont, teaching study skills to high school and elementary students who were having difficulties in the public schools in the area. I also acted as a tutor to the Stratton Mountain Snowboard Team, teaching study skills in addition to their high school curriculum.
