I'm Alan, a 26 year old currently based in Burlington, VT. I got a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and afterwards, I was a graduate student at UCLA and worked as a teaching assistant at UCLA for four years, covering most subjects available at the undergraduate level, including Calculus, Linear Algebra, Discrete Math, and Analysis. I also do grading and assistant work in the Art of Problem Solving online school, and have been doing so on and off for about 5 or 6 years as of mid-2021.
As both a student and teaching assistant, what I enjoyed and found extremely helpful when learning is the interconnectedness of ideas, and I try to make these connections clear in my teaching. I also believe that for many big-picture concepts, there are often multiple useful ways to look at them, each emphasizing something important about the concept, so I view my role as helping to guide a student to the viewpoints that make sense or are the most interesting to the student themselves.
In addition to my aforementioned coursework, I've participated in math competitions throughout middle and high school, including MATHCOUNTS (middle school) and the AMC/AIME/USAMO series (high school), going to the Math Olympiad Summer Programs three times (2010, 2011, 2012). As such, I can also tutor students looking to improve in competition, whether it be learning the required material or competition-specific tips and tricks.
I am flexible with scheduling and check emails and messages regularly, so feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
