About Julia

Bio

My name is Julia and I have been drawn to language learning from a young age, and have been teaching throughout the past 8 years.

When I was 7 years old my family moved from our New England town to live in a small village in France. At that age I quickly picked up the language. Ever since we moved back to the U.S. I have been hooked on learning new languages. In college at Brown University, I continued studying French, while also pursuing Spanish and Czech.

I lived in both El Salvador and Peru between school years and after graduating in 2011.

Through learning a new language, or even mastering a few words or concepts, you can communicate with people living in different cultures and with different perspectives. As your tutor, I am committed to helping you master the skills you are looking to target, while also keeping a focus on the real-world usage. I am a certified TESOL instructor, but believe that the tools for teaching English can also serve well in any language learning and teaching. Tutoring can help you reach your goals, no matter what level you are starting from. I have taught beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of English, and beginner and intermediate French and Spanish.

While a student, I learned the most when I was consistently pushed, but not overwhelmed. This is my aim as a teacher as well. I love working with students to find the learning methods that work best for you and gain momentum to truly excel in your desired subject area.

I am a direct communicator and supportive teacher. I have been a language instructor with teens and adults, in classroom and one-on-one settings. In each setting, it has been clear that feedback in both directions helps improve sessions. I look for feedback from my students to be sure that the session is the highest quality possible.

I try to be flexible with time. I do require a 24-hour cancellation notice, but am fully open to rescheduling make-up sessions, as I understand that schedules do change.

I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to master the language skills you're looking for!

Over the past eight years I have taught in several different capacities: as a formal classroom teacher, a one-on-one tutor and mentor, and a professional coach/trainer. In each of these positions I developed strategies to help others make overall progress in their approaches to learning the desired material. I help students pinpoint goals, assess strengths and weaknesses, consider time limitations, and create moments for self-reflection/evaluation to identify where improvements can be made or new skills that can be built on.
