About John

Hi! My name is John C., and I've just recently moved to Vermont from New York City. Ever since I can remember, I've helped tutor other classmates, then as I got older, younger students, and in graduate school at NYU, I tutored undergraduates, then later on, I worked for an agency where I tutored gifted students. I have been tutoring students of all ages, from elementary school to high school, since I was 15 years old. Three members of my immediate family are educators, including a Dean at UVM. My last tutoring position in Manhattan was working with Gifted Students, both assisting them with their more complex homework requirements and also preparing them to succeed on the SATs (and to these students, success is nothing less than a perfect score).

My style is three-fold: First, I genuinely like to engage with and understand the student allowing me to craft a lesson plan that will not only educate them but also keep them interested; Second, I believe it is important to schedule regular sessions with the parents to utilize their input, update them on their child's progress and introduce ideas and suggestions that might benefit our tutoring sessions; Finally, it is mandatory that communication is established and constant between myself/the student & parents and the student's educator. I really try to develop a proactive and positive relationship with the student's educator for multiple, obvious reasons.

My subject specialties are: literature, both English & American, English grammar, Writing, Research, History, Effective Homework & Study Skills, and finally Test Preparation... I am available immediately and my schedule is quite flexible. My hourly rates are flexible depending on your situation. I generally prefer to work with students outside of their home as distractions abound. Other options include working at my home in my office or, if that's unacceptable, the Library at UVM. Please contact me for more information.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Because the ACT is dominated by language arts (English, Reading, Science Writing) I am especially qualified as I have both a Bachelor's and a Master's in English and American literature and have spent much of my tutoring sessions helping students with just these subjects.

English

I have both a Bachelor's and a Master's in English and American literature and I have tutored primarily in these subjects since beginning my career.
