Having worked for many years in high school special education, I know how to work with teenagers of all abilities and disabilities. As such, I am aware that every person learns differently and work to tailor the teaching of each student to fit his or her needs.
A few commonalities: I both show and expect respect, I use a multisensory approach - visual, audio, and kinesthetic - I try to make learning fun using games and challenges, and when possible I utilize technology.
I maintain a policy of confidentiality. Unless a student tells me something that will effect someone's safety, I keep secrets that I am trusted with, and I make it a point to answer any question brought to me as fully and honestly as I can.
My specialties are math and English. English is what I hold a bachelor's in, and anything from grammar and vocabulary, to reading fluency and comprehension, writing and proof reading, and understanding of literature is fair game. I can easily help with math from basics up to geometry, and help prepare for the SATs. I am also able to instruct in the use of common computer programs, basic science, US history, and geography.
I would be glad to do anything from helping a student brush up on the basics of math in order to succeed in higher level classes to helping a student tackle every class in a school day. I look forward to hearing from you! Having worked for many years in high school special education, I know how to work with teenagers of all abilities and disabilities. Judith is helping me enormously with my math skills. Other tutors did not have the ability to target my particular difficulties - I have a math learning disability and she is finding ways to address my strengths and weaknesses. Judith is an excellent teacher!
Update: I feel I am ready to schedule my Praxis math exam. Judith has brought me up to speed! I am grateful for her excellent tutoring skills and would recommend her to others. Thanks so much WyzAnt!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
