About Laura

Since I love learning about new cultures and interacting with people, I have done individual ESL tutoring since 2005. During my sophomore year at UC Riverside, I started tutoring students that were studying abroad there. My focus was on oral English, getting students to practice their English while correcting their mistakes/weak areas. Also, I helped students build confidence in speaking as it is essential when learning a foreign language. During my junior year I tutored in math classes at a local high school and really enjoyed working with youth.

I was co-president of the American Marketing Association my senior year of college (at the University of California, Riverside) and received my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from there. After graduating, I lead college aged students in volunteer projects in rural areas of Costa Rica for three months. Then I returned to the USA and managed over 600 student representatives in the year that I did marketing for an organization called International Student Volunteers. During that time I found that I missed working face to face with people other than my co-workers.

After a year of working in marketing, I applied for the one year TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate program at UC Riverside. There I learned to teach English as a language at all levels ranging from kindergarten kids to college students to professional workers, abroad and in the USA. My last course in the TESOL program consisted of me teaching my own class for ten weeks.

I worked as an English teacher for ELS Language Schools; I started as a substitute and then taught my own business English class. I taught written and oral English at a college in China for a year and half. Meanwhile, also teaching speaking and listening classes to middle school and high school students at a summer camp and tutoring individual teens on my weekends.

I enjoy working with students, from kids to adults, and trying to improve their English!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated from high school with exceptional grades and went on to further my education with a bachelor’s degree and a teaching certificate (TESOL). I have tutored math classes at a local high school as well as mentored and tutored kids at local libraries and parks. I have also worked in day cares and as a baby sitter, helping kids with work. I have formal teaching experience when it comes to ESL and have taught both kids and adults.

ESL/ESOL

I have done individual ESL tutoring since 2005 when I joined UCR’s Conversation Partners. I tutored international students (IEP students) in oral English and helped students build confidence in speaking as it is essential when learning a foreign language.

In 2010 I graduated from the one year TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate program at UC Riverside. Through the program I learned to teach English as a language at all levels ranging from kindergarten kids to college students to professional workers, abroad and in the USA. My last course in the TESOL program consisted of me teaching my own class for ten weeks.

I taught written and oral English at a college in China for a year and half while also teaching speaking and listening classes to middle school and high school students at a summer camp and tutoring individual teens on my weekends. Currently, I work as an English teacher at a private language school in downtown San Diego.

Writing

As part of my TESOL certificate requirements, I took two ten-week grammar classes and a class on how to teach writing. I passed all of them with an A. After receiving my certificate, I taught 'English Writing and Rhetorics' (a beginner writing class) and ‘Advanced Writing’ at a college in China.
