About Amber

I love academia, I love it so much I wanted to be a student for life!!! Unfortunately, that's not a very practical career choice! After graduating from USC in 2006, I was a bit confused about what I was to do next in my life so I took a corporate job in hospitality and restaurant management. I did not enjoy that experience so I decided to travel and learn to cook! I really loved training under chefs and working in the culinary industry so much that I even started my own hot sauce line a few years later, but I was not completely fulfilled. My mom suggested that I move home to Virginia and focus on being more serious and enrolling in graduate school, I agreed and moved to home. That is how I began working in education. My first job was scoring the written parts of the SOLs for Pearson Education. That position opened the opportunity for me to work for University Instructors as a reading and math specialist for low scoring students in Title 1 schools. Working for University Instructors was an eye opening experience because I'd never considered a career in education. As a result, I held off my plans to pursue graduate studies in Social Psychology to take time and research my career options. University Instructors were bought out and I began working at a coffee shop as a barista and I started a business as Pastry Chef baking for that coffee shop and for private clients. During that period I started a locally popular blog and began working freelance as a Graphic Designer and Photographer doing promotional work for rocks bands. After a couple years of freelancing, I realized that while yes I had a lot of fun but I never felt complete or as fulfilled as I had in my experiences with tutoring in the school system. I began focusing on doing what was necessary to become a teacher and later that year in 2014 I became a substitute teacher with Source 4 Teachers. Through substitute teaching I was hired by a school as a long term Math Teacher at a middle school, it was then I realized that teaching is what I was born to do! In a way, I still made education and being a student my life! I still substitute, I also freelance tutor after school in reading, writing and primarily mathematics for all grade levels while I study for the Praxis 2 in mathematics and I have never been happier!

Math makes me HAPPY! My enthusiasm for the subject matter like all positivity energy is infectious! My students have fun alongside me sometimes more than me!

I have spent the majority of my experience in education focused on building scores for the SOLs. I have even had to learn new techniques for presenting subject matters to various types of learners.... some techniques I like some I don't but I am still going to work through whatever connects for the student.

A big secret about me is that I have ADHD, shocking right?! You know what it was because of very patient tutors in my life that I developed a deep love to learn about EVERYTHING! I promise to do the same for you!!!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I have tutoring/teaching experience through HS math, including Elementary Math. My first long term position was at a Middle School in Newport News, my students were expected to make a 25% pass rate on the SOLs but I exceeded the projections and managed a 78% pass rate (all before receiving my licensure!). I believe positive results come from encouragement and creating order.

Prealgebra

As a classroom instructor for 6th grade math I exceeded a projected SOL pass rate of 25% to a 78% despite the fact I started late in the fall. For 5 years I have worked as either an SOL coach, private tutor and apart of Pearson Algebra Readiness initiative for all grade levels.
