About Christine

I have wanted to work with children and be a teacher since the age of 5. I worked hard my entire educational career to reach that goal, receiving my Master of Arts in Elementary Education in 2013, and my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2012.

I have had the pleasure of teaching for the past 3 years, in first and third grades. I absolutely love seeing a child's face light up when they are engaged and developing a love for learning. I am a certified K-5 teacher, with the most experience in 1-3 grades. I have also been an after school SOL camp tutor through my elementary school that I teach at in order to prepare my 3rd graders for their approaching SOL tests in reading and math.

In math, I specialize in creating mathematical strategies with students that allow them to take ownership of their own thinking in order to solve real world problems and equations. In reading, I work with students on decoding and fluency to become better readers, as well as close reading comprehension skills in order to better interpret what they're reading. I understand that each student is an individual and has their own specific needs and learning styles. I incorporate this into my teaching, using hands on manipulatives, real world text and mathematics, and technology to engage and inspire them.

I am an extremely hardworking and organized individual who is trustworthy and responsible. I am always available through email any time of day. I look forward to meeting with you soon in order to help your child feel confident and succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master of Arts in Teaching for elementary grades K-5. I have three years of teaching experience in 1st and 3rd grades. I have also tutored my 3rd grade students after school for two years in an SOL camp to prepare them for their standardized tests.

Phonics

With phonics, I focus on decoding with students, helping them to learn the sound pattern in chunks of words in order to sound them out. Once they remember those patterns, they can use them to generalize sounds in other unknown words.

Reading

I hold a Masters degree in Elementary Education. I will be starting my 4th year teaching in the fall, and have taught grades 1 and 3. I also have experience with 1 on 1 and small group reading tutoring with my struggling students, as well as SOL prep tutoring sessions to prepare my 3rd graders for their standardized tests. I have a passion for small group reading instruction and working individually with struggling readers in order to determine their specific needs, whether it be comprehension, fluency, expression, decoding, etc.

SOL

For my 3rd grade students I have provided after school SOL tutoring camp sessions in order to prepare them for their first SOL tests in reading and math.
