College of William and Mary (Geology)
I am an alumni of The College of William and Mary and a self-proclaimed professional student. I tutor in many subjects, but I specialize in the sciences and writing/English. I also have experience working with students who have special needs and/or difficulty operating within traditional academic parameters.
There is little I find more rewarding than dedicating my time to helping others. I have a wide academic skill set, a talent for perception, and a passion for helping students and families find balance and achieve lasting success. When I tutor I often spend hours outside of official meeting times considering the needs of my students and how I can best equip them to address those needs.
As a lifelong student, I have always had a passion to learn more and challenge myself inside and outside of the classroom. Almost always this has involved surrounding myself with peers, mentors, and colleagues who have had more wisdom, talents, accomplishments, eloquence, or physical prowess than myself. It has meant listening before speaking and always asking questions, even when I think I already know the answer. It has meant making attempts, even when faced with the likelihood of failure. It has meant making peace with feelings of embarrassment, naivety, and confusion. While uncomfortable in the moment, these learning experiences have been deeply humbling and rewarding. They have shaped not only my understanding, but, more importantly, my character and how I relate to others. It is unrealistic to assume a level playing field, and amidst years of rigorous academics I have learned to resist comparing myself to others or an ideal standard of myself. These lessons and experiences form the basis from which I approach helping others through tutoring.
As a tutor, I believe that every student should have the opportunity to learn, make mistakes, and overcome obstacles without feeling like daily hurdles are a reflection of their intelligence or value as a person. I believe that everyone has unique strengths and weaknesses and should be able to learn in a way that capitalizes on their strengths. I believe the classroom setting is not for everyone and that most learning occurs when the subject at hand can be made personally relevant and engaging.
My goal is to assess students' needs, identify what they find difficult and what comes easily, and practice sustainable learning methods or time-management strategies so that they can continue to make progress on their own. I try my best to teach with integrity. I value transparency and putting the needs of the student first. A student or guardian may opt to end regular tutoring with me at any time.
Background and Interests:
I graduated with honors from The College of William and Mary with a B.S. in Geology. While in school I worked in and completed my senior thesis with the Coastal Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics lab at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
After graduating from William and Mary I began to reconsider my career plans. I spent a lot of time reflecting on what I needed from a career to be fulfilled. I am now pursuing my childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian and am preparing myself to apply to veterinary school.
In my spare time I love learning languages, going to CrossFit, immersing myself in great movies and shows, and making trips to visit friends whenever possible.
I look forward to hearing from you so that we can work together to conquer confusion and achieve lasting academic success! Brandon was able to take the study material from my son's chemistry class and immediately help him understand how to do the calculations that were difficult for him. Brandon had a quick way of determining how much information my son already had and progressed smoothly from there. He noted some methods that would be helpful in the overall topic and checked about my son's familiarity with them. Brandon listened well to my son's questions and is very easy going. We will continue to meet with him.
My daughter had missed a few chemistry lessons due to illness, but was already struggling when we contacted Brandon. After a two and a half hour session, she took the test that she had missed and received a B! Not only was she thrilled, but it really boosted her confidence!
Brandon has helped my son with physics in ways of explanations, examples and sharing of information. Brandon is very patient. Our Thanks!
Brandon is truly there to help. He tailors his lesson on the needs of the individual. Every time my daughter walks away from a session she has a true understanding and more confidence.
Brandon was very polite and easy to work with. He was very patient and was able to explain things the way my son could understand. Looking forward to the next lesson. My son actually understood what Brandon was explaining. Even through all my son's many questions, he was very patient and encouraging him.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

The earth and environmental sciences have always been fascinating to me and I have always enjoyed learning more about them and sharing my knowledge with others.
