About Charles

I have been teaching for 23 years in public schools, ranging from 8th grade to 12th grade History and Social Sciences. Specific disciplines include US & Virginia History, Economics, US & Virginia Government, World History, World Geography along with basic adult education and alternative education. All my experience has been in the public school setting with successful living history incorporated in most lessons. I am completely state certified for secondary education in History and Social Sciences.

I have proven successful in obtaining advanced scores for my students on standardized tests including by not limited to SOL, GED, and advanced placement exams. Very computer literate, I believe through proper testing techniques (using examview technology), students can learn while testing rather than just assessment.

I have limited experience in elementary education. However, teaching is an art which transcribes across age limits. My basic philosophy includes instilling enthusiasm about topics and subjects to enhance the overall educational experience. Field trips and living history have been the key for my students' academic fulfillment.

A life-long resident of northern and central Virginia, I am familiar with local attractions that will enhance an in-depth appreciation for our heritage. I will lead appropriate field trips for your student so long as it fosters excitement in your child a closer relationship between student and parent as a learning team.

I am the primary author of two historical books that I use in my current class in public education that demonstrates my true passion for history and learning.

My cancellation policy is quite liberal, requiring a 24 hour notice before lessons. I also will meet in a public area such as the public library at convenient times such as evenings to accommodate busy schedules. I will work closely with your primary educator to have your child improve and excel in any subject area. I look forward to guiding your student on their adventure in learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have 23 years of public teaching experience with a heterogeneous class load. My close work with the special education department within my school has familiarized me with the workings of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) along with current 504 accommodations as outlined by state and federal regulations. I also have first hand experience with high school academic alternative education programs of which I facilitated early in my career. However, my most profound skills relating to ADD/ADHD students is my extreme patience and diligence encouraging success and achievement.

Elementary Math

I am an established public school teacher for 23 years, teaching four years of basic math skills for 9th grade students.

Public Speaking

An initiative in my current classes in public education encourages the art of public speaking. The emphasis is research combined with physical movement and tone of voice to convey stances on current issues. Regularly allowing students to speak in front of peers on topics relevant to themselves fosters an appreciation of their characters and brings meaning to a student's self-worth, vitally resulting in improved achievement.

Reading

I am an accomplished author of two books, one of short historical stories and another as a historical novel. I pioneered historical fiction reading at my local high school in the 1990s that has resulted in an extensive school-wide reading initiative. In an attempt to help the low achieving readers, I encourage audio selections while following along with written text as an alternative to strictly silent reading. Though not optimal to progress of reading for its own sake, this process encourages expanding vocabulary skills and reading comprehension.

Social Studies

I have successfully taught in public school for 23 years all aspects of history and social studies (8-12). My focus has always been history though my teaching assignments have varied due to division needs. I incorporate living history as often into my lessons and have a particular fondness to the effective class simulations, especially political and economic, most of which I have developed myself over the years.

SOL

I have been teaching and exceeding state expectations on Standards of Learning Tests (SOLs) since their adoption in Virginia in 1998. My extensive training in developing test questions in the social studies field exhibits a superior understanding as to question style and wording including parallel structure. My unique inclusion in my classes of visual and skill-based questions using the Examview testing software has led to many students to success on standardized testing because of their constant exposure to computer testing and analytical thought.
