About Lauren

On-line tutoring only.

Hi there! I'm glad that you are interested in my tutoring services. While my teaching history isn't long, I have a great breath and depth of science knowledge.

My Background:
I attended Johns Hopkins as a Molecular and Cellular Biology major. I finished school half a year early and spent the next year and a half working at Johns Hopkins as a yeast lab technician.

Though I loved biology, my heart was always set on the medical field. Being a medical doctor was once a goal, but my first class of Introduction to Epidemiology really shifted my focus to public health. I went on to earn my doctorate in epidemiology from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Since earning my degree, I returned to Johns Hopkins to work as a data analyst. Then, I entered into my current position as Researcher at HealthCore. Over the years I've worked on a number of health studies and have published manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.

During my education, I worked for one semester as a tutor and another semester as a teaching assistant. Also, as an older sister, I've often been in the position of helping my brother with his studies. I enjoy breaking concepts down into digestible pieces. Seeing a student understand something he or she was struggling with before is the best part of tutoring.

Algebra happens in our everyday lives, but it isn't called that. It's called finances or grocery shopping or pizza eating. Algebra is an important foundation to more advanced math, but it can also help with seemingly mundane real life calculations.

With an undergraduate degree in biology from one of the top colleges in America and laboratory experience, I can help a student understand nearly any biological concept. Additionally, I use biostatistics every day at my job. In public health, biostatistics is a very important field to know.

I am Base SAS 9 certified through SAS. I've been a SAS user for nine years and had a paper published at the SAS Global Forum. When I was in college, I worked as a computer consultant, so I'm familiar with breaking down programming concepts.

If you still want me as a tutor, feel free to contact me to schedule lessons. Due to my current position, I will only be available to tutor on weekends or late evenings.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

In high school, I achieved a 6 in the IB Biology diploma exam. As an undergraduate, I majored in cellular and molecular biology at The Johns Hopkins University where I earned a BS. I have wet lab experience through college courses and a position as a laboratory technician.

Even today, I use biology. In the public health field, it is integral to understand underlying pathology and biology even assessing exposure and health outcome associations.

Biostatistics

When starting a study or analyzing a study, biostatistics is required. I've been a part of over a dozen studies where biostatistics have played some part. I've been a teaching assistant for a course that integrated biostatistics in its curriculum. I've taken undergraduate and graduate level statistics courses. As an undergrad, I took a probability and statistics course. In graduate school, I've taken: Introduction to Biostatistics, Sampling Techniques, Applied Linear Regression, Design of Clinical Trials, Measurement and Evaluation of Research Instruments, and Multivariate Models for Epidemiology.

Genetics

I took a college course in genetics and genetics lab. Also, I took a course in Evolution, which has a strong genetics component. Additionally I worked and researched in yeast labs where genetics is central to the science.

Microsoft Excel

I was a casual Excel user until 2007 when I began my epidemiology graduate education. Since then, I've become an advanced Excel user. I use Microsoft Excel on a daily basis to view, manage, and analyze data.

I am familiar with functions, PivotTables, forms, filters, and VBA subs/functions. Among my Excel achievements, I have programmed Excel files to manage pharmacy inventory of study drugs and to record daily work hour logs.

Needlework

I began knitting six years ago. I've completed a number of projects including scarves, baby blankets, baby sweater, and even a full-size afghan. This kind of tutoring would likely need hands-on tutoring since it is a tactile hobby.

SAS

I have a graduate school education in SAS and Advanced SAS. I've been a regular user of SAS (daily) since 2007. I am a Certified Base SAS 9 programmer.
