About Evan

I have had a lifelong love of learning and know how invaluable knowledge can be; both in meeting potential and in personal fulfillment.

I have excelled in academics my entire life and am adept in helping others to learn. In addition to tutoring, I am currently a substitute teacher with Prince William County Public Schools. As a result I teach the curricula of various topics at varied grade levels every day.

My undergraduate major was in biology. I have spent many years studying this topic and continue to expand my knowledge of various fields within biology. I have experience teaching this material as a substitute teacher in Prince William County; at both a high school level and at the middle school life science level. As a result I am familiar with what is expected of students for the Virginia Standards of Learning exams and how to ensure students adequately understand the content. I have experience ascertaining a student's competencies within the subject and tailoring tutoring to both improve areas and to promote a student's existing interests.

I am familiar with the Virginia Standards of Learning content objectives and can tailor students' tutoring to these objectives. The aim here is for academic success coupled with personal fulfillment and an appreciation of learning.

My majors are Biology and Political Science. And I am thoroughly familiar with these topics. For students seeking tutoring with undergraduate coursework my focuses are ecology, zoology, political theory, and government institutions. And I am also competent in related topics for high school and middle school including math, history, and other sciences.

I believe in personalizing tutoring to the needs of the student. I seek to reinforce strengths and existing interests while helping to eliminating any areas of difficulty.

I have an open availability during summer months. During the academic year I am available afternoons and evenings. Please, contact me to inquire about specific subjects, establishing a tutoring goal, and to schedule an appointment. I look forward to hearing from and working with you soon.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ecology

My undergraduate major is in Biology. For the major's requirements there was of course a requirement for an ecology course. Due to personal interests I took an assortment of organismal level courses that of course included study of the ecology of the organisms. The majority of these classes were field classes where the organisms were observed in situ fulfilling their roles and surviving in their habitat.

Government & Politics

One of my undergraduate majors was political science. I have taken numerous courses detailing government institutions and their roles in the United States of America. This also included courses of comparative government and issues of representation within the United States and other political systems.

Further, I substitute teach government and economics at the middle school level and U.S. government and comparative government at the high school level. This leaves me very familiar with Virginia SOL content objectives and those for AP exams and IB programs.

Having excelled in completing the major I am also extremely familiar with what would be expected in general undergraduate courses and select specialized courses focusing on specific branches of government, mass media, and other topics.

Political Science

One of my undergraduate majors was political science. I have taken numerous courses detailing political theory. Other courses included examples of political systems including governments of Europe, Soviet successor states, and developing countries to name but a few.
Additionally, I never cease learning on these topics. I continue to read journal article, book, and periodicals on these topics. I wish to remain current in recent changes to theory and aware of current events; foreign and domestic. From this I can ground students with standards and extend to them awareness of changes to understanding or changing situations.
