About Jessica

Hi! My name is Jessica M. and I graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in December 2014 with my B.S. in Middle Level Education (grades 4-8)/Specialization in English Language Arts. While I am highly qualified and love to help my students with their English Language Arts skills (reading, spelling, vocabulary, comprehension), I also have a license and passion to help my students achieve academic success in all subject areas. I've had very diverse and enriching learning experiences in both my student teaching placements and my substitute teaching work. I have worked with students in grades 1-8, and am very knowledgeable on the various content and curriculum involved in these grades.
Additionally, I worked as an after-school tutor at Indiana Junior High in Indiana, PA. Through my experience I have found that devoting a few hours after school or on the weekends to one-on-one sessions with a devoted, enthusiastic instructor can drastically improve a student's work ethic, confidence, and ability to problem solve. My philosophy on education is essentially that all students have strengths and weaknesses in different areas- it is the job of the instructor to facilitate a learning environment conducive to the child's needs. One of my favorite quotes puts it perfectly: “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” -Anonymous
Nothing is more fulfilling that helping my students achieve grades and master skills they struggle with. I look forward to working with you! :)

I'm an outstanding math tutor because not only am I certified to teach mathematics in grades 4-6, but I also have extensive experience teaching math through a 5th grade student teaching placement at Saltsburg Elementary in Saltsburg, PA. Over the course of 7 weeks I worked side by side with a 5th grade math teacher in which I observed her methods and techniques, as well as taught my own lessons. I also helped many 6th and 7th graders with their math homework/test preparation working as an after-school tutor.

I am an exceptional English Language Arts tutor because I chose to specialize in this content area while earning my Bachelor's in Middle Level Education. I have taught a wide variety of lessons, units, novels, and grammar skills to my previous students, and worked side by side with multiple English/Reading educators. I have worked one-on-one with students to improve their reading, spelling, writing, vocabulary, and other grammar skills. Specifically, I have worked with groups of special needs students and used data from their previous test scores to inform my instruction and provide supplemental practice and exercises to improve areas where needed and have had outstanding results. Furthermore, in order to earn my specialization in this area, I was required to take secondary (high school) level English education classes. As a result, I am confident and capable of teaching English Language Arts to 4th grade into the upper level grades.

I sincerely hope through my profile I have expressed my genuine passion for teaching and desire to help you improve test scores, problem-solving skills, reading and writing skills, and any other need you may have. I am more than willing to answer any questions you have regarding my credentials, experience, etc. If you are struggling in a certain subject, or simply need extra one-on-one practice, assistance with your homework, or need help learning the most effective study methods for upcoming tests, don't hesitate! Don't be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try! I look forward to speaking with you via e-mail or telephone. Please contact me anytime, at your earliest convenience.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teach grades 4-6 in PA, all general education subjects. I have had various experience with grades 4-6 throughout all of my student teach experiences. Elementary Math

I have worked extensively in a 5th grade mathematics setting, side-by-side an exceptional math educator. I have also assisted students in grades 4-6 with math homework, test prep. questions, and basic calculating and problem-solving skills.
