About Morgan

Tutoring is a joy for me because learning has always been a joy. Watching eyes brighten with understanding is satisfying for both student and helper alike! My general love for people coupled with my unquenchable desire to learn has made tutoring so fun for me. I enjoy helping students feel confident in their ability to learn and retain knowledge. As a Japanese tutor in college, I was privileged to help a few students to be encouraged in their studies and further strengthen their resolve to continue in them. In addition, I enjoy making new friends and sharing common interests with others.

Math is such a passion for me that I was often caught begging my mother to give me math problems to work on during the summers when school was out. I've always understood it quickly, and could often see my fellow classmates' disconnect before the teacher was able to identify it. I almost majored in it at college, but decided to pursue my lifelong passions of music and language instead. However, I loved my math gen. ed. classes!

Not only did I major in Japanese in college, but I also had the incredible opportunity to study abroad there for 11 months from November 2013- September 2014. I attended two different language schools- one in Fukuoka and one in Kyoto- and studied only language for many hours a day. I also had the opportunity to teach English to Japanese k-2nd graders, join a college taiko drum club for the summer, and tutor Japanese upon returning to the states. In addition to language, I could also share in Japanese culture, food, and experiences abroad. I wrote about 10 pages of one of my thesis on Japanese music in Japanese. I am about N3-N2 level, with natural-sounding speech.

For me, music goes all the way back to my mother singing my brother and me Barney songs in the bathtub. I've been singing as long as I can remember, and playing flute since 5th grade. I continued in lessons in college where I also began and completed music theory, aural skills, and music history. I now have a Bachelor of Arts in Music (and Japanese). Music theory fascinates me. I love sharing it with others, and I feel confident in my ability to effectively pass on those skills. I enjoy excellence and achieving one's best, so I would love to help performers to improve their sound and technique in voice and flute as well!

Anyone and everyone is welcome. I appreciate your consideration! I am approachable and warm, and looking forward to your message. Let's set up a time together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Math comes easily to me and I've always enjoyed it. I was that strange kid that begged her mom to write math problems over the summers when schools were out because I missed it. I almost majored in it in college but chose to go the music route instead. Either way, I am confident in my ability to help. I do have a Bachelor of Arts degree from a liberal arts school and passed my general math classes with A's.

English

Growing up with an author for a mother has given me an advantage in this area. Because of her influence, I have excelled in English, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, reading, and writing. I not only did extremely well in school and took honors courses in things like grammar, but also received extra homework over the summer from my Mom who always encouraged the use of correct English. Today I greatly enjoy English and helping people understand how to translate simple concepts into the complex terms that English often produces.

Flute

I am confident in my ability to help students improve their flute playing because I've been playing for over ten years. I recently graduated from Carthage College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and took lessons for flute with professional teachers throughout college. Through studio classes, honors bands, and workshops I have learned how to collaborate well with others and am able to teach others how to operate in an ensemble. I have experience mentoring younger students through studio classes and volunteer programs at school.

General Music

Recently graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carthage College in Music makes the prospect of coaching General Music exciting to me. I have been involved in music for at least 11 years, have taken and passed college level theory, aural skills, and music history classes, and have been in countless ensembles over the years. I have a general understanding of different instruments, and even some experience in world music. I would be thrilled to have the opportunity to share my enthusiasm and knowledge of music through General Music lessons.

Japanese

Not only did I major in Japanese in college and graduate with a Bachelors degree in December 2015, but I also had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Japan for 11 months from November 2013- September 2014. I attended two different language schools- one in Fukuoka and one in Kyoto- and studied only language for many hours a day. I also had the opportunity to teach English to Japanese k-2nd graders, join a college taiko drum club for the summer, and tutor Japanese language upon returning to the states. In addition to coaching language, I could also share in Japanese culture, food, and experiences abroad. I wrote about 10 pages of one of my thesis on Japanese music in Japanese. I am about N3-N2 level, with natural-sounding speech.

Music Theory

I am extremely confident in my ability to teach music theory. I have taken theory classes in high school, summer music camps, and throughout college. I have not only learned it in class but have been able to apply it for over ten years through my involvement in bands, choirs, touring groups, small ensembles, and groups outside of school. I am excited to pass on my confidence to those who are either just starting out or want to discuss more complex topics!

Voice (Music)

I am confident in my ability to help voice students improve their technique and sound. I recently graduated from Carthage College with a Bachelor of Arts and an emphasis in Voice. I have experience in excellent choirs such as the Carthage Choir, and had the opportunity to tour Ireland and Scotland with that group. I have been taking private lessons all throughout college, and recently put on a senior solo voice recital in December of 2015 that passed. Eleven years of choral and vocal experience and a desire for personal excellence make me a good fit for voice students.
