About Solomon

To all my prospective clients and students:

Thank you for your consideration. To make sure that I am the right tutor for you or your child consider the following:

I believe it is incumbent upon me to ask the right questions, so that my students find answers through their powers of deductive and inductive reasoning. This gives them more confidence in their own abilities. At times I may suggest reading material that compliments the subject for a more comprehensive understanding, and suggest some problems or exercises from their text book.

I studied for 2 years at Georgia Tech before transferring to Georgia State where I received my BA in political science. I have a good understanding of the basic sciences: biology, chemistry and physics.
I feel comfortable teaching math up to high school algebra 1 and 2, geometry, English grammar, writing, the basic sciences and high school biology.

I have a fundamental knowledge of gardening and the apiary arts (bee keeping), and over twelve years of experience in construction and industrial design. From 2005 to 2013 I was an advisor to U.S. Security Force Assistance Teams at the Joint Rotational Training Center in Fort Polk, LA, to US Rangers at Forts Bragg and Benning; and to Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and Ft. Hawthorne, Nevada.

I wish you success in 2016.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I was a student at Georgia Institute of Technology for 2 years, and tutored my 4 children in math through high school. I have over 12 years of experience in construction and manufacturing, and a practical understanding of algebra and analytic geometry. I enjoy teaching math.

American History

I'm a history nerd and a news junkie. Presently, I am preparing for the State Department's foreign service officer exam, specializing in public diplomacy. I have a BA in political economy.

Elementary Math

I studied for two years at Georgia Tech, then transferred to GSU where I received my BA. I was a civil engineering technician for a year, before becoming a designer and manufacturer of custom furniture. From 2008 to 2013 I worked as an advisor to US Army Security Force Assistance Teams.

Elementary Science

I attended Georgia Institute of Technology for two years, before transferring to Georgia State where I received my BA in political science. My wife and I home schooled our four children through high school. I was responsible for the science curriculum. I was a civil engineering technician for a year, before becoming a designer and manufacturer of custom furniture. From 2008 to 2013, I worked as an advisor to US Army Security Force Assistance Teams.

ESL/ESOL

I grew up in a bilingual atmosphere. I have gone to high school and university in the U.S. I studied for two years at Georgia Tech, then transferred to GSU where I received my BA. I was a civil engineering technician for a year, before becoming a designer and manufacturer of custom furniture. From 2008 to 2013 I worked as an advisor to US Army Security Force Assistance Teams. I am familiar with the problems that students have while learning another language. More than half of my friends and relatives speak three or more languages.

Geography

I've had a fascination with geography since I was a child. We traveled in two continents as my father's career took us far and wide. The variety of flora and fauna that I saw in my travels inspired me to learn about what I experienced. I'm a history nerd and a news junkie. Presently, I am preparing for the State Department's foreign service officer exam, specializing in public diplomacy. I have a BA in political economy.

Grammar

I have a BA in political science and I am an avid writer. I love literature and I read about three books per month on a variety of subjects, from anthropology to biology. I suggest that anyone who writes papers for high school, college, or their profession should purchase an English grammar handbook and review it often.

Political Science

I have a BA in Political Science from Georgia State University. I was an editor for a bimonthly newsletter for a pro-democracy group, years ago. I was a cultural advisor to US military officers deploying overseas from 2007 to 2013. I am an avid student of the American political system and US foreign policy. I am presently studying for the Foreign Service Exam.

Prealgebra

I studied for two years at Georgia Tech, then transferred to GSU, where I received my BA. I was a civil engineering technician for a year, before becoming a designer and manufacturer of custom furniture. From 2008 to 2013, I worked as an advisor to US Army Security Force Assistance Teams.

Reading

My wife and I home schooled our four children. They are voracious readers with keen interests in myriad subjects from military history and anthropology to gardening and carpentry. In young students, proficiency in reading is built through practice; in older students, a healthy curiosity for some aspect of their world gives them the motivation to improve. With practice, patience and perseverance anyone can improve their skills. Being bilingual has given me the chance to develop an appreciation for the richness and beauty of words. I think if I convey that to my students quickly, their own curiosity and volition will lead them to success in any field they wish to pursue.

SAT Reading

I scored in the top 5% on the English portion of the SAT. I was a student at Georgia Tech for 2 years. I am an avid reader of books and newspapers, in particular the Wall Street Journal. I read about 3 books per month on subjects ranging from US foreign policy to anthropology. The last books I read were "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell; a science fiction novel by Phillip Dick; and "The Grand Chessboard" by Zbigniew Brzezinski, former US Secretary of State.

World History

I have been a student of world history my entire life.

Writing

I have a BA in political science with a keen interest in history and world affairs. I was a proof reader for a small, bimonthly newsletter published by a pro-democracy group. I am bilingual and for four years I was a cultural advisor and interpreter for US military personnel who deployed overseas. I am a student of literary styles and fascinated by etymology.
