About Susy

I have more than three years of experience tutoring and teaching English to non-native speakers, both children and adults. In 2012, I taught English for a summer semester in Rabat, Morocco to underprivileged children. This experience enriched my learning and led to my TESOL/TEFL certification. I am passionate about promoting literacy and reading skills. I believe that because we are in a "paperless age", children come into less contact with books and other reading materials. It is my personal responsibility to give my students a well rounded learning approach by using a diverse selection of materials. Skills which I focus upon are reading fluency and comprehension, writing (informative, creative etc.), grammar, speech and computer skills.

My experience has primarily been with immigrant families by helping students K-12 become more excited in their school work while teaching parents how to become more involved in their children's education. I work closely with parents, teachers, and students to develop customized lessons to suit each students personal needs. Lessons coincide with topics discussed in class while developing and building upon important skills. I create worksheets, use online resources and games to complement individual lessons.

When teaching adults, I focus on the motive of the English learner. No matter what the motive, all lessons are customized based on varying factors such as occupation, educational background, and personal goals. There is a great emphasis on vocabulary and communication complemented by reading, writing, speaking exercises and assessments. My background focuses on conversational and business English.

In addition to English, I am incredibly passionate about History/Social Studies and Spanish. I speak Spanish fluently, and may offer Spanish tutoring to all ages.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 3+ years tutoring K-6 in all subjects, with a heavy focus on English/Language Arts, Writing and Reading Comprehension.

ESL/ESOL

I have 3+ years experience tutoring students with limited to no prior exposure to the English language, as well as students who don't have English-speaking parents or relatives, and thus struggle to meet grade level standards. ESL students are my favorite and I really make it a priority to help them learn and adapt to a new language and culture.

Handwriting

I have 10 years experience working with elementary students and assisting them with handwriting. I myself have studied Arabic so I can relate to the frustrations of learning how to write new letters. When correcting and teaching handwriting I patiently and slowly explain how to write the letter while demonstrating, then demonstrate again. It is important to give written and oral instructions as well as provide a demonstration.

Writing

I have experience tutoring students ages 4-18, as well as adults and I know that every student is different. My job is to adapt to your students needs and create an approach based on his or her specific learning style. Identifying learning styles facilitates finding the correct methods and exercises to strengthen reading, writing and comprehension skills. A strong reader is a strong student in all subjects.
