West Virginia University (PhD)
I developed my tutoring style at Northern Arizona University as an undergraduate and expanded it while teaching at Richmond Community College, Estrella Mountain Community College, and Northern Arizona University. I believe that all students have the capability and intelligence to be successful in the sciences and mathematics. It is my job as a tutor to guide their intuition to be successful with the problem solving strategies needed to be successful with these subjects.
I attended Northern Arizona University where I received my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. While at NAU, I began developing my skills as a tutor of the introductory physics and mathematics classes. In addition to the undergraduate tutoring, I was also involved with scientific outreach programs for elementary schools in the Flagstaff area.
After my undergraduate degrees, I pursued a PhD in Physics at West Virginia University. While there, I continued tutoring introductory students with an emphasis on both engineering and bio/medical applications. Additionally, I started my training to become a teacher. I was assigned many labs sections to not only teach but to develop new experiments to incite student interest and involvement.
After graduate school I spent a few semesters teaching conceptual physics to both technical and non-science students at a community college in North Carolina. When I moved back to Arizona, I taught Mathematics and Conceptual Physics at Estrella Mountain Community College. The time at the community college helped to refocus the most effective teaching and learning methods. I transitioned to teaching college and university physics at Northern Arizona where I focused developing a course for a learning-centric environment with an emphasis on life-long learning transferable skills. Dr. James did a great job helping my daughter with her chemistry troubles. He broke it down into components that were easier for her to understand and was different from the way she was taught in class. That's the key here, if they're not learning it in class, maybe a different approach would make the difference. It surely did. He also spotted another area he could help her with: converting word problems. I would HIGHLY recommend him!
My son took a 5 week summer Chemistry class at the community college. My son has been out of math for awhile, and it's needed in Chemistry. James definitely knew both subjects. He always guided and helped him through any problem that was challenging. Since it was a very short time frame, we were under pressure to find a tutor fast. James was very flexible (and affordable) with his time. Give him a try; he's worth it!
James has been extremely patient and through in tutoring General University Physics. He knows the material and explains it so it is understandable and can be retained for exams. We have him scheduled 5 days a week, for a minimum of one hour, and he has willingly accommodated this demanding schedule.
Physics help and math as well. He really goes over everything so that you may better understand. Definitely has raised my grade by a lot.
James is showing my son how to get maximum points on his next exam by helping him practice the steps to complete his Physics problems and providing him a template to show his work. Having taught at this level, he knows how to guide to help him solve the problems on his own.
I've seen James twice a week for a month now and will continue to receive tutoring. James helps take hard to understand concepts and approach it from different views.
James is excellent with numbers! He takes the time to break down the concepts to help you understand it much better and quicker. I recommend James to anyone who needs help in chemistry or any subject involving numbers!
My daughter took one lesson with James and she was very happy. He knows teaching methodology and his lessons are easy to follow.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
